Chamber lights State 'Grab'

(From Page 1) for casino6, getting a "free ride" at Seaville while chamber members were paying $30 to have their literature on display. He twice ordered the casino brochures out. No Free Rides COURT HOUSE — It sounded simple enough : How about letting motorists from Stone Harbor and Strathmere ride free across toll bridges they are forced to use while other routes are closed for repairs? The suggestion, posed by the county freeholders, opened up a can of legal gobbleygook about how that would require the county Bridge Commission to track down all bond holders since 1965 and ask their permission. Forget it, the commission said. It's still 40 cents. Pull Your Plan? COURT HOUSE - Middle Township Committee and Middle Township School District will combine efforts, and surplus in a public auction 11 a.m. Nov. 10 at the municipal garage, west end of Mechanic Street. The township's selling about eight cars, a truck, a van, couple dozen bikes, office equipment etc. The school's getting rid of a van, office equipment, tables and chairs, and, most intriguing, an airplane tractor.

WHETHER IN RESPONSE to that fuss, or as part of a new state program, the Division of Tburism decided this month to put an information center there "making available information about the entire state" This woman (State Tburism Director Victoria Schmidt) has deceived us," said Patterson. "She was going to do everything for us. She knifed us in the back." Thus the chamber is urging its members and all business operators to write Gov. Thorras Kean, with a copy to local legislators, "to stop their power grab ... We must not allow the state to come in and take over our Cape May County Tburist Center to promote all the rest of New Jersey to our vacationers and visitors." PATTERSON SAID the Seaville Service Center gets as many visitors in three months as the chamber's center in Crest Haven gets in 12 because the former is in the middle of the parkway, and serves northbound and southbond tourists. Patterson pointed out that, while the New Jersey Highway Authority, operator of the parkway, donated the space to the chamber and provided water and electricity, the chamber took care of liability insurance^ cleaning and maintenance; staffing with three full-time persons from a week before Memorial Day to Labor Day, and operations expenses of telephone service, equipment, promotion, etc. "We even put in our own air-conditioning," said Patterson.
