• . * The latest release from noted jazz composer /bandleader Carla Bley is a wonderful piece of work - that should be checked out. Heavy Heart (ECM/WATT) is an excellent example of Bley's complex world. The music in its grooves is basically jazz, yet there are plenty of rock touches and a healty sense of humor. Make no mistake about it, Heavy Heart isn't fushion music, it's jazz (often borrowing _ melodically from Duke Ellington) but played with the fiery, raw spirited, energy of the best rock and roll. Musical highlights are plentiful, but pay close attention to Hiram Bullock's guitar, Michael Mantler's trumpet~and Kenny Kirkland's piano. Also noteworty is Bley's organ style. Not since LarryYoung played with Tony Williams Lifetime has an organist played with such conviction. Sometimes its sheets of dominating chording take F the place of a rhythm k guitar, while at other times
she gives her material a moodier texture. Carla Bley is one of our country's greatest talents and this is a fine place to discover her. EB '84 (Mercury) is the first studio effort from the reunited Everly Brothers and it's a dandy. It's as if they never left, as Phil and Don's country-tinged vision of rock and roll still sounds overwhelming. TTieir twopart harmonies are fresh and enthralling and the choice of .material — especially their Paul
McCartney -composed hit, "On The Wings of A Nightingale" — is inspired. EB* 84 is a perfect comeback for The Everly Brothers, who are clearly still a force to be reckoned with. Greatest Hites Live! (I.R.S.) by The Animals isn't as successful as last year's reunion effort, but it's still good enough to make one wish the guys hadn't split for good. Most of these numbers are close to 20 years old, yet The Animals still pack a lot of emotion into their performances. Eric Burdoh is in especially good voice and it's nice to have a live version of Alan Price's solo, post-Animals, tune "0 Lucky Man!". My only complaint is the fact I.R.S. had them concentrate on remakes of classic hits such as "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "It's My Life", "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place," etc. instead of including live versions of their newer material as well. It should've been a double album.
