SPLASH (Touchstone) "PG" One of the nicest, funniest comedies to be released in '84 was the box office Splash. It promises to be an even bigger hit now that it's out on the [I home video market. Its story is simple: a bachelor (Tom Hanks) falls in love with a mer- _ maid (Daryl Hannah). Needless to say, this highly unlikely event is responsible for numerous laughs. Hanks and Hannah are. splendid together. Besides the humorous moments they're also capable of bringing a touch of sadness to .Splash. One is quickly wrapped up in their lives. Nearly stealing the show is SCTV alumnus John Candy. Playing Tom Hanks' brother. Candy is hilarious. h
He's crude, sloppy, lazy, and a bum, yet he's got a heart of gold. His love for his brother is never in doubt. Splash is a lively movie that succeeds because it's got a solid plot and is not an excuse for strung together jokes and bits. You owe it to yourself to see Splash. AFTER THE FOX (CBS/Fox) •NR'l This mid-60s comedy is pretty funny, and has aged fairly well. Peter Sellers plays a crook who becomes a filmmaker to. cover up his latest endeavor. Actually stealing the show from Sellers is Victor Mature, who portrays an over-the-hill actor. All in all. After The Fox is a good night's worth of entertainment.
Fans of horror films should pick up the book Video Screams by John McCarty. It's perfect for the avid fanatic of gore who wants to complete his video collection with some obscure gem. His brief reviews are enlightening, often showing a sublte sense of humor. McCarty also gives us some memorable photo6 taken from various movies and supplies us with names and addresses of different video companies. It's a labor of love and I hope McCarty will be able to update Video Screams each year.
