Dear Mr. Zelnik and Readers: I was very excited when I first thought of creating a column on being overweight for the Cape May County Herald/Lower Township Lantern. In college. when I was taking writing courses, and again at post-grad.uate level, my professors would always em phasizie-lshould write ority abuuftLmgs of which I had " (vr s t - h a n d " knowled^ Lettrays felt that would wjrfake for dull reading and so was prone to fantasize in my essays and articles. Most of my writing, though ego-building, offered very little substance. S But for years I waited blindly for that "exciting" story to happen that would be my first-hand offering to the world. Then one day it dawned on me that I had missed the entire point of these courses and there was something I did have a great deal knowledge of for

an extended period of time. It was obesity IF 1 COULD JUST capsule the feelings of being overweight, if 1 could point out the intolerant treatment inflicted on fat people in our society, if I could shed jusl a little light on^ie " lone liness and isolation that being different causes, then there was a worthwhile mission, a challenge, a CAUSE! I anticipated that I would receive hundreds of letters daily from fellow sufferers in this county and that together we would not only correct all of our problems, but in addition would right social wTongs while we were at it. My anticipations were unfounded. I am grateful for the opportunity to write the "Diet Do's" column for this newspaper. I thank Mr. Zelnik for accepting my original proposal and for encouraging me along the way, both verbally and by mention (sometimes humorously) in his editorials.

I WAS TOUCHED by the people who wrote to me and trusted me with their burdens. 1 truly hope I have been of some small help to them. This experience has been wonderful for me and I am honored by the acknowledgements that I have received. However, it seems lately that I have not had the response that warrants a column in our paper. Rather than continue, I think this valuable space should be used for another type of message. Perhaps the next offering to replace Diet Do's will also touch and help a few people in a different way. That's what makes our hometown paper special to each of us. I just hope they don't sell the space to advertise JELLY DONUTS! Enamelist Exhibits At League CAPE MAY - Susan Conrad, artist-enamelist, will exhibit at the Cape May Co. Art League through Dec. 30. On display are her enamel jewelry — earrings, pins and necklaces. Enameling is an ancient art. It appears that the Greeks, in the 5th Century B.C. were the first to fuse enamel to metal. Enamel is powered glass which is heated on metal in a kiln and fired to very high temperatures. There are numerous techniques and the designs are infinite. Mrs. Conrad, of Ardmore, Pa , began enameling as a hobby. College, work and the birth of her daughter, Margo, put a temporary break in her interesting hobby. A simple request from her father for her to make him a tie tack started her back into a full schedule of enameling. The hours of the Art League are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. From Saturday to Nov,304he"Membership Show will take place. Saturday 7:30 to 9 p.m. is the opening reception. For more information call 884-8628. y
