Capers, Crusaders Aim At Soccer Laurels

There is a real battle brewing between two Cape May County schools in soccer competition. Going into this week, both Lower Cape May and Wildwood Catholic stood in position to take county bragging rights for this season. Last week, Wildwood Catholic won two easy contests to come within one loss of Lower. Egg Harbor Township threw a scare at the Crusaders, holding a 1-0 lead into the third period, but Keith King nailed two goals to stop the upsetminded Eagles

KING G </tA b e p Crusaders on the board s early in the period via a e pass from Pat Mac- c Far lane. MacFarlane later 1 put Wildwood Catholic 1 ahead with a score of his own. King's second d minutes later put the icing J on the cake for a 3-1 \ victory. Wildwood Catholic's s other win was not of the t white-knuckle variety. \ St. Augustine proved no match for the Crusaders as 1 Wildwood Catholic scored r early and often in an 8 to L t victory. MacFarlane and f King once again played big i I . (

parts in the win. Each scored twice as W.C. moved into position to challenge front-running Cape May with a 10-2-2 slate. Pat Dwyer, John M (-Curdy. Bud McGratfa and Wes Jones also found the net for Wildwood Catholic. LOWER _C APE May seemed to be working into shape with a clean 4-0 win over Oak crest Goalkeeper Bill Sheets handled 13 Falcon shots to record the shutout. Supporting Sheets on the offensive side of the field were top Kevin Jackson and Calverly — each up with one score. Jim Rizzo had himself an afternoon, hitting the nets on two occasions for the Capers. Lower stood 4 at 18-1-2 following the win. Elsewhere, Micfdle Township got the bounce of the -ball to go its way in a close 2 to 1 win over Absegami. Art Kelly got credit for the goal that tied things up in the second period as his shot bounced off an Absegami defender and into a vacated net. James Carmen got the game-winner late in the third period as twiddle played great defense to stop the Braves the remainder of the contest. • • • IN GIRLS field hockey last week. Middle i Township was supposed to roll over play dead against a good St. Joseph squad, but didn't. The Panthers battled one of the top teams in the CAL II to a 1-1 stand off as Kelly Fitzpatrick scored with 17 minutes gone in the second half . ^Middle upped its record 7-4-1 with the tie. Shirley Crux stopped everything Hammonton had to offer as she worked her goaltending magic into a shutout. The only problem was none of Cruz' Lower Cape May teammates scored at the other end. IN FIGHTING for the scoreless tie, Lower improved its ledger to 7-2-3 on the season.

Ocean City stayed in the thick of things in the CAL I race with a 18-3-1 record following a 6 to 0 win over Wildwood Catholic last week. Klaudia Gorman found the twine twice for the Red Raiders as they made a rout of things early. Also scoring in the first half for Ocean City were Kristy Miller and Maggie Quinn. • • • The girls tennis team from Ocean City played a match in Group III playoffs last week and the results were not good at all. Topseeded Eastern overwhelmed the Red Raiders by a 4-1 score. Collecting the only point for the fifth-seeded Raiders was the doubles combination of Tory Frank . and Lianne Fleming. In other tennis action Lower Cape May got the best of Wildwood Catholic by a similar 4 to 1 score. N CRUSADER Liz Buchanan got Wildwood

Catholic off on the right foot with a singles victory in the top slot, but things quickly went down hill from there:* Lower's Jill E sober and Kelly Weeks won the next singles matches, setting up a sweep in doubles. The teams of Margaret Kelly and Karen Smith along with the duo of Sally Pomykacz and Sherri Sheppard were the winners for the Capers. Jennifer Grottola of Wildwood Crest, Chris Oliva of Ocean City and Ed Gibbons of Cape May proved to be top-notch surfers recently. The trio won their respective divisions at the Eastern Surfing Association Olympic Sports contest held in Ventnor. REMARKS: Who is the greatest running back of all time? My vote would have to go to Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears. Payton is a threat in so many ways on the field that he surpasses

Jim Brown and OJ. Simpson. Besides gaining more yards than any of them. Payton knows how to throw a block as well as throw a pass. He can also catch a pass when called on to do so. . I keep hearing the argument that Brown played only nine seasons as he set the record for yardage that Payton just passed Payton did it in the sixth game of his 10th season I know that they play more games per year now-a-days, but it still took only 10 years and Payton shows no signs of letting up. The rumblings are starting to be heard that the Philadelphia Eagles have a chance at the playoffs this season. I had a chance to see the Birds at the Vet a couple of weeks ago when they beat the New York Giants. From what I saw, it was one average team boring the other into submission No post-season action for the Eagles this year.

Red Raiders Take Fifth J On 27-0 Win • ' I
