Conan The Destroyer (MCA) "PG" after reading the initial reviews to the second installment in the Conan series, I expected the worst. Therefore, I was certainly pleased to discover this isn't a bad film at all. It's not great, either, but then it doesn't pretend to be. The makers of this Conan film have given us a slice of fantasy to amuse us for a couple of hours. No heavy messages, just some good scenery, sword battles, magic, and thrills. IN ALL honesty the story and direction pale when compared with the first Conan. What saves it is muscleman Arnold I Schwarzenegger's porI trayal of the legendary barbarian. If anyone was bom tar a part, it was Schwarzenegger to star as Conan. Physically, he's perfect, but it's the sensitivity he brings to the role that allows us to overlook much of the insipid dialogue. Kudos to singer-turned-actress Grace Jones, who gives a spirited performance that will be remembered by fantasy fans. Maybe she lacks the warmth of Sandahl Bergman, who was Scwartzenegger's last co-star, but Jones is wild, colorful, and exciting — just the type of actress an action/fantasy movie needs. Conan The Destroyer might not be art, but for those who approach it as the visual comic book it really is, it is a lot of fun. Here's hoping there'll be a third Conan film in the not-too-distant future. The Last Waltz (CBS/Fox) "PG" This might be the best music documentary ever shot. Director Martin Scorsese filmed the farewell concert by The Band on Thanksgiv-
ing, 1976. His camera work makes the entire show seem larger than life, even on the smallest television set. ONE REALLY feels part of this historic performance. Besides the country-blues-tinged rock and roll of The Band, The Last Waltz features performances by the likes of Neil Young, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, and Bob Dylan, among many others. All the people involved seem to be inspired by the sad, yet strangely festive, spirit of the evening. I know people who used to be bored stiff with the albums of The Band, yet after seeing The Last Waltz they rushed out and bought them all. That's what makes this a great documentary. The film works hand in hand with Ihe music, not against it. It's unfortunate some of today's hotshot video directors haven't learned that lesson yet. Best of all, it's nice that the magic of The Band's music lives on through the wonders of video. * Bazaar Set At Airport RIO GRANDE - The annual Christmas craft bazaar at the Airport Senior Center, Bldg 29, (across the street from the County Airport) is set for Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Featured will be all hand-made items from ornamental to practical.
