Lower Cape Edges Wildwood Catholic
It had the feeling of a championship game and it was played1 like it. The clash between Lower Cape May and Wildwood. Catholic in soccer last - week was billed as a winner-take-all showdown. And you know, whoever did the billing was absolutely right. Lower Cape May went into the contest with just two losses, one"" in the league, and Wildwood Catholiuhad just twoysetbacks in CAL II play. I From the opening gun Lower took control of midfield area with Keith Jackson sending the Crusaders backward with booming kicks. The Capers got off 25 shots with Kevin Jackson beating goalie Chris McCurdy for the only tally in the 1-0 victory. AT THE OTHER END of the field, Caper netminder Bill Sheets stopped 15 shots
to earn the important shutout. Lower Cape May will face the winner of the . Willingboro-Collingswood game in the second round of Group III playoff action after earning a bye in the first round. Wildwood Catholic goes on to the second round of Parachial "B" playoffs this week on its home field. IN OTHER ACTION last week, Ocean City played twice and both times the Red Raiders came up on the wrong side of the scoreboard. Against Holy Spirit, Ocean City got off 30 shots on Holy Spirit goalie Lars M^lrhstrom but couldn't score in a 4-0 loss. Later in the week, the Raiders got a taste of the Lower Cape May scoring machine in a 4-2 setback. Once again the Raiders got off a lot of shots, recording
28 against Sheets. Bruce Calverley highlighted the Caper efforts, scoring twice for the winners. it's playoff time in girls field hockey and a couple of Cape May County teams squared off last week. Ocean City used a penalty corner to score its only goal in a 1-0 victory over Lower Cape May. Maggie Quinn set the play into action with Kristi Miller picking up the game-winner at 1 : 55 of the second half. Ocean City faces Eastern this week in the next round of the Group III South playoffs. Over in Group II, Middle Township found the going rough against Gateway. Gateway used three solo scores in a 3-0 win in a game played at Woodbury. THE OCEAN City girls
cross country team had everything going in its favor against Egg Harbor Township. They were runn-' ing on their home course and undefeated Mary Jo Dougherty was leading the way, but it wasn't enough in a 25-31 setback. Dougherty, 12-0 in dual meets, ran her personal best to win the meet, but Egg Harbor took the next four spots to win the points race. The Red Raiders finished the regular season with a "10-2 record overall and took first place in Ihe CAL I with a 5-0 slate. The girl's tennis team at Lower Cape May plays the game very well and Absegami got a lesson first-hand last week as the Capers breezed to a 5-0 win. In singles play, Jill Coldren, Jill Escher and Keili Weeks lost just seven games between them in the sweep. The teams of Karen Smith and Margaret Kelly and Sherri Sheppard and Kelly Rasmussen continued to clean up in doubles play. In other shutouts, Sacred Heart blanked Wildwood, 5-0, and Ocean City fell to Cumberland by, the same score. MIDDLE TOWNSHIP traveled to Wildwood Saturday and before they left the island they had a 23-0 win in high school football action. Tim Edwards had another big day for the - Panthers, rushing for 113 yards and a touchdown from 12 yards out. Mark Edwards carried the ball just nine times for Middle, but gained 54 yards and scored in a 14-yard run. Completing the scoring was the combination of Rob Hicks and Mike Donovan. Hicks hit Donovan on a . 25-yard pass play. Donovan also out a foot to the Warrior adding two extra points and a 32-yard field goaf. Andre Harris led the Warriors with 29 yards rushing on six attempts. A third-period safety turned out to be the difference at Erma as Lower Cape may fell to Pleasantville, 15-13. The Capers fell behind early as Pleasantville scored a touchdown on its first play and, another later in the first period. Af that point Lower came back behind a great effort from running back Mike Wing. ON THE DAY. Wing gained 151 yards on just 14 trys, including a scoring jaunt from 45 yanis out as the gun sounded to end the first half. At the end of the first quarter, quarterback Kevin Lure caped a long drive going over from the one yfird-line on a keeper. Ocean City kept its championship hopes, alive with a stunning 27-0 win over Atlantic City. With the win, Ocean City sets up a showdown next week with undefeated Vine land Fullback Frank Sayers played workhorse for O.C., rusing 21 times for a total of 103 yards and two touchdowiis. Other Raider touchdowns came from Bob Kronkenberger on a one-yard run and David Miller on a 14-yard reception from quarterback John Gunnels. Ocean City played ball control most of the afternoon as it worked for 21
first downs to just three for Atlantic City. REMARKS: Clint Richardson of the Philadelphia 76ers has seen very little playing time this^j season and many think the^ team is about to trade him away. The Sixers may want to, but shopping a guard around in this day and age is hard to do. Everyone wants a big man. I think Richardson can play, but the Sixers are quard-rich right now and do need another power forward. I would hate to see him go, but first the Sixers will have to find a taker. The Philadelphia Eagles should be glad they got a tie against Detroit last Sunday. If Eddie Murray hists an easy field goal in the overtime, they lose. A Philadelphia team that is winning are the Flyers. When they play they give the average fan a treat. They play aggressive and
have talented people in the right spots. TTie New Yrok Islanders seem to be having their troubles right now and all the better few the f Flyers. If they keep winning they could get a solid lead in the Patrick Division. Capers Capture CAL Soccer Title /
COURT HOUSE - The Lower Cape May Soccer team captured its first Cape Atlantic Division II Championship Oct. 30 at a packed Crest Haven Field by shutting down Wildwood Catholic, 1-0. The Capers, in only their fifth season in the league, used a tenacious team defense to keep the Crusaders off balance throughout the game. The winning goal was scored by freshman Kevin Jackson (his 17th of the season) at the 19:53 mark of the first period and proved to be all the scoring the Capers needed. SOPHOMORE Keith Jackson then dominated play at mid-field and sparked the offense by lof- ' ting long passes to both wings throughout the remainder of the game to keep the pressure on Wildwood Catholic's goalie Chris McCurdy. Sophomore Bill Sheets recorded his fourth shutout of the season and received inspired defensive play from Senior fullbacks Joe Lucas, Rick Hinker and Junior Mike Hudgins. THE CAPERS traveled to Shawnee Saturday for
the first round game of the New Jersey Coaches' Tournament. Today, the Capers will play host to the winner of the first round game between Willing boro and Collingswood in the Group III State Tournament. The Capers are seeded second and drew a first round bye. Game time will be at 3 p.m. (time is questionable)
