Ocean City Hosting Rival Grid Squads
OCEAN CITY — This resort will host both "Owls" and "Rockets" the last week in November as part of Temple University's 100th birthday celebration. Temple has scheduled a special centennial football game inside Atlantic City's Convention Hall for Friday, Nov. 30. Competing squads, the Temple Owls and Toledo Rockets will be housed in Ocean City just 12 miles south of the casinos. TEMPLE WILL stay at the Flanders, a gracious 60-year-old hotel overlooking the ocean at Uth Street and the Boardwalk. Toledo has opted for the Port '0 Call, the city's modern, luxury motor inn just a few blocks away at 15th Street and the Boardwalk. The teams were invited here by
Mayor Jack Bittner, a graduate of Temple and cochairman of the Centennial Committee. It's historically appropriate that the Owls nest at this resort as Temple trained in Ocean City in 1930, when it played in (me of the first indoor collegiate football games at Convention Hall in Atlantic City. At that time, the squad's headquarters was also the Flanders. Temple scored a lopsided 34-0 win over the University of Miami in that early meeting. The November 30th classic will be the first indoor collegiate football game at Convention Hall since 1973. THE FLANDERS Hotel has already received the menus from Temple which will feature usual substantial fare for healthy, growing men of the grid-iron. George Dietrich, manager of the Flariders, reports that Temple's day before game dinner will include fruit cup, sirloin steak, six fried shrimp, baked potato, salad, chocolate cake, ice cream, rolls, butter and beverage. The Toledo menu will be equally as filling Mayor Bittner will declare the week of Nov. 30 "Temple University Centennial Week" and will greet the teams when they arrive. "As a graduate of Temple University, I'm especially pleased that we can be part of the gala celebration now underway," said Bittner. "Temple has many graduates living in Southern New Jersey who have made major contributions to our community and state over the years." The Centennial weekend includes a post-game reception with Bill Cosby in the Convention Hall Ballroom (Nov. 30). There will be champagne brunch at Harrah's Trump Plaza Saturday, Dec. 1, 11 a.m.

CG Waves Make A Smashing Debut
CAPE MAY - In the first match of the 1984-85 season the U.S.C.G. Waves took on J.T. Builders in Women's power volleyball. In the first game the Waves served notice on the league that although they are the new kids on the block they are not to be taken lightly as they destroyed J.T. Builders 15 to 5. The next three games were much the same as the Waves dismantled the Builders 15 to 3, 15 to 6 and 15 to 6 to take the match 4 to 0. THE SECOND match of the evening pitted two veteran teams, Kona Sports and the Needlers. The Needlers drew, first blood as Chris D'Allesandro and Marion Lamach's well placed spikes propelled them to a tough 15 to 12 victory in game one. Kona got un tracked in game two as the fine play of Dee Sciarra, Shirley Ludman and Lisa Marcolongo helped Kona crush the Needlers 15 to 4. Game 3 was much closer as both teams traded leads throughout. Mia and Lisa Macolongo provided the difference, however, as their fine net play enabled Kona to squeak out a narrow 16 to 14 victory. The Needlers evened things up in the final game as the excellent all-around play of Joanne Laffey, MicheUe Bird and Debbie Palmer led the Needlers to a 15-4 destruction of Kona. TWO NEW teams were matched up in the third match of the evening as Muscle World took on Middle Rec." In the first game the super sets of Daphne Sanderson and the controll-
ed bumps of Jane Reidenbach enabled Muscle World to keep Middle Rec. in check on its way to a l£r7 victory. Donna Juliani and Betty Kershaw's spiking and setting led Muscle World to a close 15-11 victory in game three. Muscle World closed out the match with a 15-6 victory behind the fine allaround play of Sanderson, Reidenbach and Kershaw.
