CRS Seeking Help Against Starvation

CAMDEN - More than six million people face starvation in Ethiopia as a result of a famine of unprecedented magnitude, says Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Senior Director for Africa Ken Hackett, who returned this week from a visit to Ethiopia. •I've never seen anything this bad," Hackett said. "We've gone beyond documenting the cases of malnutrition to counting the dead. In two small towns I visited, there were 106 deaths in one day alone." TWELVE OF the country's 14 regions are suffering from drought and famine. The number of people arriving at feeding . centers, after walking for several days, far exceeds the available supplies of food. Catholic Relief Services, which has operated a food and nutrition program in A: %:■

Ethiopia for many years, has expanded its efforts a n <f is currently distributing 90 percent of the American food reaching Ethiopia. Coordinating with local chuch groups and the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission of the Ethiopian government, CRS supports feeding centers in Tigray, Eritrea, Wollo. Shoa, Sidamo and Gemu Goffa. By the end of 1984, CRS will have distributed 39,000 tons of food to 650.000 people. ACCORDING TO Hackett, the current greatest need is for cash donations for the CRS program. "The situation is going to get worse before it • gets better," he said. "Although we hope to move an incredible amount of food, we're only scratching the surface. We need more money to transport food from the ports to the

people." CRS is the official overseas relief and development agency of American Catholics. Aid is non-proselytizing and is given in 70 countries solely on the basis of need. Tax-deductible donations for the emergency in Ethiopia should be in the form of checks made out to

Catholic Relief Services. They can be earmarked "Drought Emergency" and sent to Catholic Relief Services, Post Office Box 2045, Church Street Station, New York, New York 10008 or they may be sent locally to Rev. Dominic T. Bottino, Diocesan Director, Catholic Relief Services, 1845 Haddon Avenue, Camden, New Jersey 08101.
