Smithereens (Media) "R" This cult hit is an interesting film, jn spite of the fact there's an amateurish feel throughout. Smithereens deals with the lowest rung of the pop music world. It paints an ugly pictufre, not just of the world, but of individuals. A girl, Ren (Susan Berman) is trying to crack New York's new wave scene. She'll do anything to advance herself, even allowing a once big rock star (played stunningly by real life rock musician Richard Hell), to use and abuse her. ON PAPER one would . feel sorry for Ren, but she's 1 just as fickle and callous as those who tajce advantage of her. She's not above hurting others. Besides, she hasn't any talent, she' just hoping to find a way onto easy street and music and her choice rather than acting or modeling. The few humorous and w a r m moments in Smithereens are overshadowed and submerged by director Susan Seidelman's cynical touch. Smithereens isn't great, •but a lot of work and energy went into this, making it worth viewing. Jimi Plays Berkeley (Vestron) "PG" Jimi Hendrix was one of the most adventurous musicians to emerge in the 60s. He got sounds out of his guitar that others have been trying to copy since his ultimely death. Few have come close, but it really would be impossible to successfully duplicate the music of Hendrix, as he absorbed the best of raw blues, avantgarde jazz, electronics, and, of course, rock. THIS CONCERT footage does a nice job of capturing the energy and excitement of Hendrix. Not only was

his music turbulent, but so was his live show, even to the point of destroying his guitars while playing them. Granted, much of this was for theatrics, but it was also a logical extension of the physical side to his music. Popular music historians are lucky to have a documentary like this to use for reference. If your eyes get too tired of watching videos, you might want to read a book instead. Well, an excellent choice for my fellow t.v. addicts is Jeffrey Forrester's The Stooge Chronicles (Contemporary Books). As the title implies, this is about the wacky Three Stooges. It is a glorious book that tells us about their successes, failures, offscreen quirks, and their body of work that still has people laughing today.
