Composting Plan Promoted by MUA

SWAINTON - The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is actively promoting the establishment of municipally-sponsored compost operations for leaves, branches and grass clippings. In a letter recently mailed to all Cape May County municipalities, the MUA noted that composting has numerous economic and environmental benefits, which include:

Tipping fee avoidance for materials which are composted; rebates, in the form of tonnage grants, from the State Office of Recycling and the creation of useful product-compost, which can be used as a soil conditioner. ACCORDING TO Diane Leonik, recycling coordinator for the MUA, an application for a leaf compost permit has been submitted to the New Jersey Department of E vironmental Protection by the MUA. This permit, when approved, will allow the Authority to establish a compost facility at its sanitary landfill in Woodbine. "The initial facility is designed to last for 10 years and will have a capacity of 10,000 cubic yards," Leonik said. The compost will be available to all county residents at no charge. INCLUDED with the letter to the municipalities were two composting guides, a "how to" guide prepared by the Middlesex County Department of Solid Waste Management and a guide to obtaining a permit, wich was developed by the New Jersey Office of Recycling. The MUA is also offering technical assistance to municipalities when preparing an application for a leaf composting permit and also on how composting facilities work. Anyone desiring further information on the subject can call Diane Leonik at 465-9026
