Marshallmlte Eyed As Historic Area

The Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township will undertake a survey of historic homes and sites in the Marshallville area for the purpose of nominating the village as an Historic District. The nomination, if approved by the Office of New Jersey Heritage, would result in Marshallville's being placed on the State Register of Historic Places. The nomination

would also be forwarded to the United States Department of the Interior to be considered for eligibility for the National Register. THE LOCAL Preservation Society has received the permission of the Upper Township governing body to prepare the application and, according to Virginia Wilson, of Marmora, society members will be assisted in preparation of the application by the County Planning Board.

Mrs. Wilson said that the first step in completing the application will be the delineation of proposed district boundaries. Boundaries will be set after historic research and consultation with property owners and with the municipal planning board and township committee. SHE EMPHASIZED that designation as an historic district on State and National Registers does not in any way infringe on the right of property owners to alter, move, repair or paint their homes. "In fact, the owner of an historic house in a designated district may demolish the building, »■ a. m

though we hope to see them all preserved," she said. *n>e preservation society believes that Marshall ville has a good chance of being designated as an historic district because of its early shipbuilding and glass manufacturing activity. Even though the Marshallville area was bisected by the construction of Route 49, there are still many surviving homes with architectural features of the e%rly period. The society is anxious to receive information and suggestions from the public which could be used in its work. » The society's address is Post Office Box 658, Marmora, New Jersey 08223.
