Cut Holly Carefully

One of the best times of the year to prune the holly tree, by a nice coincidence, is just before Christmas. When American holly is pruned for Christmas try to maintain the typical coneshaped form of the tree. Use sharp tools. Never break a branch off. If a branch is cut back to the trunk or a twig is cut

back to a branch, no new growth will start at that point, but if a stub is left or you cut back to a bud, new growth will occur. It isn't necessary to use paint for small wounds. Holly needs to be cut the day before it is used, letting the stems stand in fresh water as long as possible.
