Mews Notes from — The Wildwoods Thomas Parsons 729-5768
Our appreciation is extended to Lydia Sapovycz I for her recent photographic display at the Wildwood Crest Public Library. Lydia, who is a Wildwood High School graduate and a long-time library patron, is becoming increasingly recognized for her outstanding photographic talent dipicting the "flora and 5 fauna" of Cape May County. The recent showing at the library was Lydia 's second such presentation and many patrons are hoping for a rotating, permenant display of her craft. The Crest Library, over the years, has become known for its displays of crafts and artwork created I by "home-grown" talent and the displays have become an intergral part of the atmosphere of this fine facility. THE LIBRARY opened
its doors in December, 1972, and since its inception has issued well over 4,000 family memberships. This ' unique facility, presently under the direction of Bill Smith, ehjoys an excellent working relationship with the Cape May County Library while still remaining distinctly independent. The Borough of Wildwood Crest donated the beautiful, beachfront parcel, while several visionary local residents donated the funds for construction, and the library continues to operate through the generosity of a small group of local residents. The library offers free
family memberships to any and all residents of Five Mile Beach. The library is located at 6301 Ocean Ave., Wildwood Crest, and welcomes patrons seven days a week : MondayFriday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday \0 through 5 p.m. • • • IT SEEMS as if the season just ended but the Greater Wildwood Little League is energetically making preparations for the 1985 season. Crest residents Hank Bryski, Tom Sinzheimer, and Tom Higgins were appointed to the executive board and election of officers is slated for December. Returning members to the executive board are Sandy Becker, r.A.L u n 1 1 Dint McCall, Rick
Anzelone, Peggy Lewis, and George Denham. Just heard that tourist inquiries, as received by the Boardwalk Tourism Office, dropped in total numbers for 1984. The boardwalk office received approximately 18,000 write-in requests for information and logged 5,000 calls over the "800" number. This year's total is 1,800 less than the 1983 season. Many business people are blaming the impact of the casinos for the decline in interest in the Wildwoods since the inquiries have dropped a full 40 percent since Resorts opened its doors in 1978! Oddly enough though, this doesn't seem to explain an equally precipitous decline in the same number of years BEFORE casinos FORTUNATELY, members of the three community's tourism commissions view this 15-year decline in inquiries as a solvable problem and are establishing aggressive "game plans" to inject much needed enthqsiasm— into the prdmoLjon^l efforts. 7 /f Both the Wildvwwd Crest Tourism Commission and the North Wildwood Tourism Commission have pencil ed-in numerous activities and marketing items as they set about the revitalization of their respective resort's promotional efforts. Believe it or not, a dolphin bite was inflicted upon a resident of Five Mile Beach this past week ! While diving in Florida, Tom Saywer had the dubious distinction of being bitten by what was described as a "crazed" dolphin. We have been unable to find out how common this type of injury is, but it ' seems that the bite was superficial and that the dolphini suffered no ill effects frim the incident. . . » m • x
Hie Greater Wildwood Jaycees would like to extend an invitation to' any interested "Islander" to attend their next regularly scheduled meeting. The Greater Wildwood Jaycees are an organization that has recently achieved international fame in becoming the NUMBER 1 chapter in the United States. To become the outstanding organization, each chapter is judged upon memberL- ship and over-all community service activity. With such events as the Career Symposium and the well-received Restaurant and Hotel Trade Show in their "arsenal" of activity, the Greater Wildwood Jaycees should prove to be a powerhouse for many years to come! The Jaycees, under the capable direction of President Mike Brown, meet every second and fourth Wednesday at the chapter headquarters at 3005 Pacific Ave., WilrliifAn/1
DON'T FORGET THE Wildwood Rec Department's Nov. 28th Senior Citizen trip to see ''Oklahoma'* in Philadelphia. Call 522-5837 for reservations. Our mention of the Crest PTC trips to see "Cats" generated response and the PTC would like to inform the welcome readers that the trip is sold out. If your club or organization is running a trip, give us a call We're always pleased to list the trips, as the proceeds benefit all community residents through increased community service and interesting activity. "Here comes da sludge" is the continuing word out of the Wildwood Water Department as it proceeds with the hydrant flushing process up and down Five Mile Beach. Bob Beebe, superintendent of the Water Department would \like all residents to know that they are on the final phases of the process and - — tl* low pressure and sediment problems that occur concurrently with the hydrant flushing will soon be a thing of the past. Beebe would also like to inform the "happy homemakers" who missed the earlier warning notices that just one washing with bleach will restore their "whites" to their former color! Andrew Zuzulock was recently honored at a birthday luncheon given in his honor. Andrew, who just turned 4, is the son of Bell Zuzulock, the school nurse for the North Wildwood School District.
