By Charles Lamey You're Gettin' Even While I'm Gettin' Odd (EMI) is the first album for the J. Geils Band since the departure of vocalist Peter Wolf. Surprisingly enough, the band seems to be nicely holding its own. Maybe keyboardist Seth Justman isn't as charismatic a frontman as Wolf, but he does a more than decent job filling those large shoes. The music is less bluesy and more mainstream rock than previously, but this style better suits Justman's voice. A solid effort from a band that seems more than capable of weathering one of the most dramatic personnel changes in rock's torrid history. TIRED OF cold, unemotional techno-pop? If so, turn off your radio and rush out and buy The Persuasions' No Frills (Rounder, One Camp St., Cambridge, MA. 02140). For 20 years, The Persuasions have kept alive the sound of 50s-styled a capella. This album is chock full of vibrant, passionate vocal performances. One would have to have ice water running through his veins not to be emotionally moved by this record. Maybe the doo-wop sound will never return to the top of the charts, but, as long as The Persuasions are allowed to record, we, at least, have an alternative to the soulless sound of the synthesizer and electronic drum machine. FANTASY Records and has had a jazz reissue program for quite some time that's been rightfully praised worldwide. Now, they've gone deep into their vaults to bring back some long-forgotten classic blues sessions. % These are budget reissues, too, so while you're able to hear great music, you won't hurt your finances. Two of my personal favorites are Willie's Blues by Willie Dixon and Memphis Slim' and All Kinds Of Blues by Memphis Slim. T h e W i 1 1 i e Dixon/Memphis Slim record is from the late 50s and is more or less in an informal setting, as their rhythm section was quickly thrown together for this session. Nevertheless, Dixon's expressive vocals, acoustic bass, and honest songwriting coupled with the dynamic piano work of Memphis Slim keep this from being sloppy. These might not have been their regular sessionmen, but Dixon and Slim never lost control. The Memphis Slim album dates from 1960, and it's just Slim singing and , playing piano. A good pori tion of this is upbeat boogie piano, but Slim also shows a warm, sensitive side. All Kinds of Blues should be heard by those who cherish blues pianists. After all, - Memphis Slim is one of the greats.
