To Explore Future Of Delaware Bay

STONE HARBOR - The future for people living along the Delaware Bay is the focus of a 1985 Wetlands Institute-Lehigh University research project announced this month "Man and Bay Together: Reflections on the Past, Projections of a Future for Delaware Bay" will ateempt to answer some provocative questions and explore changes for communities along the bayshores. The public will be invited to participate in seven meetings in New Jersey and Delaware during the spring of next year. "THIS IS the single most exciting project the Wetlands Institute has ever attempted," said assistant director Anne Galli, who instigated the grant application. "It is the first joint bistate program of its kind and will increase public awareness of both cultural and environmental

liabilities and assets in a half forgotten area of our coast." An unusual research effort which couples natural resources, historical background and present day life styles with relationships of mankind to the bay, the program received matching grant funding from the Mid-Atlantic Member Councils for the Humanities, a newlyformed multi-state organization. FUNDING WAS approved by the New Jersey Committee on the Humanities and the Delaware Humanities Forum in the amoimt of $17,756. The Wetlands Institute and its research arm, Lehigh University at Bethlehem, Pa. will contribute $22,195 towards the program. Inquiry will be made into the values, attitudes and traditions reflected in the lifestyles of people who lived or are living in Sussex, Kent and New Castle counties in Delaware and Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties in the Garden State.

The regional meetings of humanities scholars, community leaders, historians, scientists, teachers, fishermen, business operators, residents, nature conservationists, recreational boaters and others will be held in each of these counties during April and May. THE CONFLICTS between societal and > technological demands versus environmental concerns and ways of life along the bay will be discussed. A rich history of the region and its cultures will be presented from local sources for the first time. And finally, in a one-day focal point meeting to be held at Wilmington in June, the elements from the six previous county meetings will be joined for a full scale overview of the past, present and future of Delaware Bay. Wetlands Institute director of research, Dr. Vince Guida of Lehigh University - will be the introductory speaker for the final program. The Wetlands Institute is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to education and research concerning coastal ecology.
