Tours Feature Mansions
CAPE MAY - On three Saturday evenings in December, Mansions by Gaslight Tours will open four of Cape May, New Jersey's Victorian landmarks to the general public. These tours will be held, Saturday, Dec. 8, 8 to 10 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 22, from 8 to 10 p.m. Sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts (MAC), these tours of the interiors of restored vintage homes, each representing a different form of architecture and planning, offer a rare and intimate insight into Victorian lifestyles. In each house, guides point out the original furnishings on display. TICKETS FOR the Mansions by Gaslight Tour may
be purchased at the Emlen Physick House, 1048, Washington St., starting one half hour before tour time. In order to help tourgoers get from one house to another, MAC'S trolley-bus will run on a continuous transit loop. Houses open on the Mansions By Gaslight Tour include: The Emlen Physick House (1048 Washington St.), designed by famous architect Frank Furness, a noted Victorian House Museum. It is the headquarters of the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts. The Abbey (Columbia Avenue and Gurney Street), built in 1869 for a Pennsylvania coal baron, is an outstanding example of Gothi Revival Architecture. It features a 60-foot 'tower, etched ruby glass
windows, and some of the most elegant formal roonfs in town. % THE MAINSTAY Inn (635 Columbia Ave.) was built in 1872 as a posh gentlemen's gambling club. It is a classic example of the Italianate Style, with 14-foot ceilings and wraparound verandas. The Wilbraham Mansion (133 Myrtle Ave.) began as a simple country farmhouse built in 1840. It was expanded and Victorianized in 1900 by the wealthy Wilbraham industrial family from Philadelphia to become the massive structure it is today. Its many rooms are filled with outstanding Victorian furnishings
