Gingerbread Houses Go On Display

CAPE MA* - The second annual' Gingerbread House Contest, sponsored by the Cape May County Art League and the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts, welcomes Christmastime entries from all age bakers.

Last year, a dozen gingerbread houses were displayed. It is hoped that a little "village" of houses, churches, castles, carousels, shops, and reproductions in miniature of actual Cape May buildings can be created

this time to display at the art league. The contest is open to anyone who would like to try a hand at making a gingerbread structure. TTie rules are simple: buildings must be made entirely of gingerbread. Nongingerbread structural supports are permitted if they are not visible. Only edible materials may be used for decoration. They must be on a firm base, preferably wooden, not larger than 3x3 feet, and the base must be covered either with Gingerbread or other edible materials. No non-edible materials may be visible. ENTRIES MUST be received at the art league, in the Carriage House on the Physick Estate, 1050 Washington St., Cape May, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14. The name, address, and telephone number of the maker should be included on a 3 x 5 inch card as well as whether the house is to be entered in the junior division (bakers through high school) or senior division. Houses should be constructed as to remain on display until Saturday night, Dec. 29, when the judging for the contest will take place by popular vote of those attending the annual Christmas Candlelight House Tour. The houses may be taken home at the conclusion of the party Dec. 29 or may be picked up on Sunday, Dec. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Houses not claimed by Dec. 31 will be donated to the birds! The prize will be an appropriate "basket of cheer" for both the junior and senior division winners. For a copy of the contest guidelines or for further information about the contest, contact Joan Wells, chairman of the Christmas House Tour at 884-8702.

Norse Hide Presents In Norway often the Christmas presents are. hidden all over the house. In your search for your presents, if you by chance find someone else's gift, you are to pretend you didn't see it and go on hunting.

A Dutch Christmas .CAPE MAY - Dutch Christmas is celebrated at Captain Mey's Inn at 202 Ocean St., one of the fascinating inns on the Cottages at Christmastime tours. St. Nicholas, chosen by the people of Holland as the patron saint of children, became the "Santa Claus" of today. At Captain Mey's Inn his presence is traditionally displayed by the fireside, where children's wooden shoes are filled with carrots and hay for St. Nicholas' horse. In return, St. Nicholas will leave toys and sweets. These traditions and others, including three authentically decorated Christmas trees, are displayed at Captain Mey's Inn at Christmastime, when guests are especially invited to visit and share in the joyous season.
