■ CAPE MAY - The city's original downtown shopping district. Washington Street, is welcoming shoppers this Christmas season with many special events. Visitors will be charmed by gas lights wreathed in holiday greenery, garlands swagged from pillar to porch, and Christmas trees decorated especially by the shopkeepers. HOSPITALITY Night and the Candlelight Walk, both popular annual events, will be held Friday, Dec. 14, and Thursday, Dec. 20 respectively, from 7 to 9 p.m. This is the traditional way for the merchants of Cape May's Washington Street to thank residents and guests for shopping here. Store-fronts are lit with lanterns and candles and ' the proprietors offer

refreshments of the season to shoppers — wine and cheese, coffee and cakes, or perhaps cider and doughnuts. SANTA WILL add to the charm of Washington Street on weekends in December, distributing early gifts to children while listening intently to gift requests for the Big Day. Meanwhile, grownups can enjoy the personal shopping assistance of the private and family-owned businesses of Cape May. Local craftsmen and artisans will create their wares in many of the unique shops. FOR SHOPPING convenience, many of the shops on Washington Street will extend their hours until 9 p.m. from Dec. 9 through Christmas Eve to make gift shopping easier.

UPON RETURNING to the Estate, visitors are next guided through the lavish interior of the Physick House. This 16-room mansion was designed by renowned architect Frank Furness. Built in 1881 in the Stick Style, it has been painstakingly restored as a

high-quality Victorian House Museum. The museum's interior contains outstanding examples of Eastlake-style furnishings and fixtures (many of which were original family pieces designed by Furness, himself) as well as collections of costumes, toys, and artifacts. Ending this combination tour on a festive note, visitors are served hot cider and goodies in the Physick House kitchen. The cost of the whole tour package is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Tickets are on sale at the entrance to the Physick House. No Reservations are necessary.
