Twilight Zone — The Movie (Warner) "R" It's too bad the unfortunate death, during the filming of this movie, of veteran actor Vic Morrow overshadowed the final outcome of this picture, as it's a good, not great, piece of work. . For those who are unaware of this project, four of today's hottest directors, John Landis, Joe Dante. Steven Spielberg, and George Miller, each took one episode of the classic, and influential, television show and did a remake. The only exception is Landis' opening story, which is an original idea, although Twilight Zone master Ron Serling often dealt with the same subject. UNFORTUNATELY, it's Landis' story which suffers the most. Vic Morrow plays a bigot who hates Blacks and Jews. Despite a brilliant per-

formance from the grossly underrated actor, Landis' direction is too heavyhanded. The rough language destroys the mood of the movie. Serling would have been more subtle in his approach. This is just too obvious, and consequently, mars the entire project. Spielberg makes up for it with his remake of "Kick The Can', about a man with the power of helping elderly people cope with aging by allowing them to be children again. Scatman Cruthers por- , trays the man with the , special powers and he does a . fine job. The only drawback is that the story is weak and ; allows Spielberg's wors*. i tendencies to come, to the ; fore (i.e. being overly senI timental). Fun to see once, . but not strong enough to see

again. "irs A GOOD Life" is a lot better. Joe Dante (Howling/Gremlins) did an incredible job here, as this version is on par with the original, despite being brought up to date. This ohe deals with a small boy who can use people through mind control. He lives in a world of junk food, television cartoons, and loneliness. If people cross him, be'lkJake their mouth away or tufn them into cartoon character, never to return to the r^ world. Dante, as can be expected from his other films, gives us plenty of scares, laughs, and even warm moments. No matter how rotten this boy is, Dante never lets us . forget, he's doing all this evil, because his special gift has made him lonely. • NIGHTMARE AT 20,000 Feet" is the final story and it's, by far, the best of the four. John Lithgow takes over the role William Shatner made famous. He plays a man who is deathly afraid of flying. To make matters worse, be sees through his window a gremlin trying to damage one of the plane's engines. Everyone thinks he's being paranoid, refusing to believe him. Lithgow grows more Aid more intense as the story unfolds, and, between his fine acting and dramatic camera work, we're given a truly enjoyable bit of film work. AS GOOD AS "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet" and "It's A Good Life" are, what steals the show is the prelude, which was directed by Landis. Here, two men, Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks, are drving along, luring us with some soft humor, when all of a sudden we're given one of the biggest thrills of the movie. If only the rest of The Twilight Zone could have been as stunning. Nevertheless, there are many reasons why one should see this. I really doubt the directors thought they could surpass the work of Serling, so we shouldn't expect something better either. It's good entertainment and that's what counts.
