Ocean City Shares A Third Of Crown

Just about the time everyone was sitting down . * to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner, the Ocean City football team was feasting on Pleasantville to add a couple of more things to be thankful for. With a 21-6 win over the Greyhounds. Ocean City collected a piece of the Cape Atlantic League 1 tijle and set a school -record for consecutive wins at nine. Despite the score, the Red Raiders, had to work a bit harder than expected to win the game. THE RAIDERS hit the scoreboard first as Frank Sayers went over from 10

yards out with 2:52 left in the first quarter. Sayers had a chance to put the Raiders up by two touchdowns in the second quarter, but the Ocean City running back fumbled at the Pleasantville 11-yard line, giving the Greyhounds new life. The Greyhounds, who gained just 17 total yards in the first half, almost turned the fumble into seven points. With the ball at midfield and just 39 seconds left in the half, P-ville quarterback Chuck Lyles tossed a 50-yard scoring pass to Robert Moody for the ap-

parent game-tying touchdown. Then the referees took the score ' away, saying Lyles had crossed the line of scrimmage before sending the pass downfield. Realizing that they maj( . have been given a break, Ocean City came out in the second half, ready to go. On the first drive, David Miller went over from the five, capping a 71-yard, 10-play drive. On its next possession. Ocean City put together another drive which was stopped at the Pleasantville eight when Sayers was driven on a fourth-and-one effort. PLEASANTVILLE finally got on the board with the help of a penally flag and a trick play. THE PENALITY came first. Ocean City was called for pass interference, putting the Greyhounds on . their own 45 yard line. The trick play was next. Quarterback Lyles pitched the ball to back Vernon Beard who hooked up with Moody on a touchdown pass. A missed extra point kept the score at 14-6. Sayers put the cranberry sauce on the turkey, bolting 56 yards for his second touchdown. On the day, Sayers rushed for 137 yards on 20 carries. Helping Sayers in a balanced attack were Bob Kronkenberger (9 for 75) and Miller (8 for 36). Ocean City finished the league season with a 7-1 record, to share the title with Vineland and Holy

Spirit. Ocean City's overall 9-1 record was the best in South Jersey, the only blemish coming in the first week of the season against Holy Spirit. With just a few weeks left in the Pro Football season, things still seem uncertain as far as the playoffs are concerned. Before -the season got underway, I picked Miami and San Francisco for the Super Bowl. I see no reason to change that now. The most suprising chain of events took place in the NFC East where the Philadelphia Eagles played a big part. The Eagles' win over Washington a few weeks ago kept the race tight. Each week brings about another interesting turn. The Dallas-Miami matchup to end the season may decide the NFC East title winner. Pelle Lindbergh and the Philadelphia Flyers are off to a great start, and it looks as if things can only get better. The Flyers played a

couple of weeks without the services of Dave Poulin and didn't miss a beat. Lindbergh went 10 games in a row without a defeat recently and keeps on getting better in the nets. The Philadelphia 76ers like it on the road. Lately, the Sixers have played better away from the friendly surroundings of the Spectrum. An overtime wiiwt Phoenix seemed to <Ve about in classic Stxei1 fashion. Fall behind, come back and slip to make it close at the end. With Andrew Toney back in the shooting guard position, look for Moses Malone to emerge to his former MVP style. Teams cannot double team the big guy

when Toney is bombing away.
