Winter Offensive Through the chainsawed shrapnel from the elms a gray coated squirrel dashes a ciphered line across the limb littered rubble of the snow banks like some great-coated courier bolting a barricaded cellar. The crossfire gets his message when he's nearly through the barbed-wire No Man's Land to warn the others of the winter offensive. e.j. duffy

Continuing with our series on urinary tract infections, we consider the causes of getting bacteria into the bladder, which are varied. Sex is probably the most common. Women would be well advised to urinate after sex in order to wash down any bacteria that may have been introduced in the urethra by the trauma of sex. NYLON STOCKINGS, underwear and tight jeans are also known for their role in creating a proper environment for the development of these infections. *Some less common causes would include: Chemical cystitis caused by certain foods like sauerkraut, which irritate the lining of the bladder, making it easier for bacteria to set up shop. Also, the dye in colored toilet papers has been reported to cause a chemical irritation. HOLDING IN urine for long periods of time when you have to go also encourages infection. Wiping from back to front is often discovered in young women to be a major cause. Wiping should always be front to back. Cystitis is very common in women having sex for the first time, or for the first time after an extended break. It is also common in both men and women who are of advanced age and particularly those living in nursing homes. We will discuss urinary tract problems of the aged extensively in a future article.
UK1NAKY injections in men are less common because the man's urethra is longer, making it harder for bacteria to reach the bladder. Usually a structural defect such as an enlarged prostate gland is involved. Your physician's treatment goal will be to identify an antibiotic to kill the bacteria causing your problem. Your urine may be cultured to grow a large enough quantity to allow indentification of the bacteria. IF YOU have had a great many of these infections your physican may suggest that futher studies be done to check for physical adnormalities. Sometimes the causes of cystitis can be physiclly corrected. It is critical to realize that if you have the symptoms of bladder infection, medical treatment must be sought in order to bring the symptoms under control. YOUR PHYSICIAN should be informed of the type of symptoms, how long you had them and any associated medical complaints you may have. In this article we have discussed some of the preventive measures available to you to avoid such infections. Untreated bladder infections can become a major threat to your good health. Readers with questions on tliis topic should address them to Dr. Beitman at his office, 116 N. Main St., Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society, of which Dr. Beitman is president-elect.

Head first or feet first? Along with all the other dilemmas of Christmas comes a perennial one — what is the right way to eat a chocolate Santa? Ever since #1 and #2 were little boys, they've unwrapped their Santas with greedy fingers, only to be licked momentarily by a chocolate elf. How many Chris tmases have I heard, "He's too cute to eat." Some Chris tmases the Santas have disappeared piecemeal over the course of several hours, finger by finger, toy bag, boots, gradually working up to the beard until the head is finally bitten off. » ; "I shouldn't have eaten him ; I should have saved him." has been heard a lot. "He looked cuter on the outside than he did on the inside," #2 said one Christmas as he licked his chops A whole army of foil-wrapped Santas presents a special challenge. They disappear in a variety of ways in usually rapid succession. Some of them have disappeared even before making it to a Christmas stocking. They have disappeared from their hiding places under my bed, leaving behind an empty space in a candy box. It sounds a little grim, but some of our Santas have been crushed all at once rather than being .consumed piecemeal. This is especially the fate of very large, very delicious family -style Santas. When #1 and #2 were very little boys they used to cry as they ate their Santas, feeling like murderers on the loose "It's only candy," an -unfeeling uncle observed one Christmas as #1 wailed as he chewed. One Christmas #1 laid it on #2 by exclaiming, "If you really really loved your Santa you wouldn't have eaten him all up." That made #2 cry all the harder as Mom wiped the sticky cheeks. Hollow Santas have been eaten without too much trace of guilt, but a good, solid very large Santa who needed a lot of munching before being finally consumed is another mattter. Marshmallow Santas have given #1 and #2 a little bit of momentary remorse. "Aw, his guts are all (4fciing out. /urn, Yum," #1 told #2 one Christmas as little brother gave Santa a good licking.
Thoughts on Miracles

Perhaps if only once in fifty years The golden moon would climb across the sky, Escorted by a million twinkling stars, Men would be loath to pass such beauty by; Perhaps if centuries lapsed before a rose Put forth its crimson petals to the sun,
Distilling fragrance on the morning air, Men would be humbled at the sight of one; Perhaps if robins only sang for gold And miracles were not so commonplace Men would forget their hatreds long enough To see that every bush reveals Gorfs face.
