I Court House Shares Salt

CREST HAVEN - How is Cape May Court House suddenly like Cape May. Stone Harbor and Avalon? Its drinking water also has too much sodium (salt), according to recent lab analyses of samples taken in mid-October. The county Health Department release of the results offered no explanation for the addition of Court House to the communities with sale water problems. Court House water taps had readings of 51.9 mg/1 (milligrams per liter) and 50.8. The statej recommended maximum ' for persons on salt-

restricted diets is 50 mg/1, and the federal recommendations is 20 mg/1 . The well that is the water source for the New Jersey Water Co. had a reading of 39.4. The highest number in . the survey came from Stone Harbor which had a 97.7 reading at one of its four municipal wells. The other three were 57.9, 57.3 i and 47.1. 1 Its taps tested at 58.7, 1 53.8, 51.6 and 51.2. I Cape May had the I highest overall readings with faucets testing at 68.7, 58.7, 53.4 and 53, and its wells at 75.6, 66.8 and 30.7. I Tap water at a Cape May j Point home, served by | Cape May water, tested at 53.6. And wells on the U.S. Coast Guard base in Cape May had readings of 57.9 I and 55.3. Cape May reportedly hasn't used the well with fe the highest reading in I years, and has been & negotiating for a new water ft source for some time. L Only one of four taps I sampled in Avalon had a ft higl] with a 51 . The f* other three were 43.1, 33.1 I and 28.4. Its also had one I high municipal well, with a K 51.6. The other three were L 47.9, 44.3 and 28. 1 One Sea Isle City f; municipal well had a 69.9 reading. I The Health Department F had been testing water in Avalon and Stone Harbor | bimonthly since August of I 1983, then went monthly £ and added much of the rest » of the countylast- [ February. j Results over 50 mp/1 are given to the municipalities [ and to physicians, who are i supposed to keep the sodium content in mind in [ treating patients on salt- \ restricted diets. : Two prominent local car- , diologists have said the salt

levels are nothing to be concerned about. Another purpose of the monthly sampling is to settle the question of how much salt water intrusion there is, and where, so that a county Planning-Health Department report with recommendations can be prepared next year. The county samples mon^ thly, but analysis is done the environmental laboratory at Stockton State College until the county gets its own equipment in operation.
