Lighting Of Holly Tree Set
WOODBRIDGE - The Garden State Parkway's venerable Shoemaker Holly, believed to be over 300 years old, and located at t h e J o h n B . Townsend/Shoemaker Holly Picnic Area, Cape May County, will be the site of a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony 7 p.m. tomorrow, the New Jersey Highway Authority has announced. The tree has an interesting history: it was about to be dragged away by bulldozers in the early 1950s to make room for the emerging Parkway, when members of the Holly Society of American took
their cause to preserve the tree to the Highway Authority Commissioners. As a result, plans were redrawn, and the Parkway spread out on both sides of the tree. COMMISSIONER ChaHes E. Starkey, Brick town, will serve as master of ceremonies. The festivities include Christmas music presentations by the Ocean City , High School Band and the Trinity Youth Choir of the Central United Methodist Church, Linwood, as well as carol singing. Free hot drinks and snacks will be distributed. & The public is invited. t
