Midlantic Studies Statewide Pact *

EDISON — In response to inquiries, Midlantic Banks Inc. stated that it is carefully studying the recently announced agreement between Statewide Bancorp, and Marine Midland Banks, Inc. revealed last week, and that it would not have any further comment on Statewide until complete details of that agreement are made available to Midlantic and other Statewide shareholders. Robert Van Buren, chairman of Midlantic, said, "We remain fully committed to developing a New Jersey-wide banking system that will serve the best interests of businesses and consumers across the state as well as the interests of the communities of which we are a part.
