From The Principal
I By Stanley Kotzen Pnn< i pal. Lower (ape Mi> Rejyonai High School
Here is the latest "how to" book It's called How To Make The Honor Roll, and it is a very short book - for sentences It is printed here in its entirety, courtesy of the Heboid Lantern, and reads 1 Come to school every day 2 Pay attention in class 3 Do your homework 4 Study for tests There are no pictures in the book, but it has an ex tensive dedication to 149 youngsters who made the A and B honor rolls at Lower ("ape May Regional High School for the first marking period The book is free because the advice hasn't changed in 50 years NOW THAT report cards have been distributed once this year, student; and mis year, muuciiu. «iiiu
parents have hopefully begun to adjust to this first evaluation There have been some youngsters grounded for poor per formance and some rewarded for outstanding achievement, but it is hoped that no one's perfor ma nee has gone unnoticed Report cards are ex tremely important to all of us For educators, we make public judgments on students accomplishments ' or the lack of them i which we must and will justify For students they are tangible evidence of the way in which their perfor mance has been rated by their teachers, and for parents the report card should be viewed as an assessment of a youngster's efforts during nine weeks of school REPORT CARDS measure behavior not potential ' In examining the r records of some of our . students who made the l honor roll and some who } did not. it is clear that there ^ is little correlation between * scores on intelligence tests i and academic i achievement ' At this time of the year, i many parents will be ^ assuaged or consoled by f I K.I th-il I ^
the fact according v some test scores, their son k i or daughter "can do Jl ^ better" k L They are fed the promise ? f of "intellectual potential". h i and they drift somewhere * r between the headmess of I 1 admiring what their child J ; might do and the anger of t ) demanding better results • ^ from the youngster 1 ^ ACADEMIC success is • 5 rooted more in effort and j i consistency than the « \ results of a one time, stan C dardized, intelligence test i Any youngster in this l school can make the honor 7 roll, but must be willing to J work for it Reputations r and potential are too ,\ nebulous for any conscien [ tious teacher to measure I Excuses and alibis for h failure to achieve, rain I down in a torrent at report f card time < As a youngster >j I sprinkled a few ra f uonalizations myself > j YOUNGSTERS blame J their teachers, their peers. [ their guidance counselors. 1 j and too often parents are j a conveniently ready to ac- j g cept these "explanations j on the assumption that h their student is capable of j J better work. | "Under-achieving " is the j 6 educational piece of jargon j that is thrown around to ex- ] I plain student and parent j [J dissatisfaction How can j j anyone "under -achieve'' i j Either one achieves or one ] » does not achieve
The implication of such a statement is of course that a student is not working up to his or her potential based on some date other than the report card Let's forget potential based on some data other than the report card Let's forget potential for awhile and focus on performance When it comes to changing attitudes, psychologists have demonstrated that we must alter behavior first In order to break down prejudice we must stop discrimination In the same regard in order to get better grades youngsters must work harder and more productively It's all spelled out in this new book
