Mall Merchants: Speed Removal of Meters

CAPE MAY - City workers start taking down the parking meters every Oct. 31. then put them all back late in May But Washington Street Mall merchants complained to City Council Monday that it. takes two weeks' longer to remove the mall's meters. Some thought it was a conspiracy to gouge shoppers. Work crews say it's not their fault; there are 1.200 meters that have to be decapitated, starting on the beach. And the job takes time. Meanwhile., shoppers complain to the merchants about having to feed the meters past the legal deadline There are 130 meters at the mall. IN RESPONSE. Mayor

Arthur Blomkvest said, "the police chief has recommended that the mall meters be left up all year round, but the council has no problem directing that the mall meters be removed first." The mayor added that the city is also considering an easier way to take parking meters out of service: simply put a bag over them for the winter At any rate, the meters will demand 50 cents an hour next summer.

generating an estimated extra 125,000 in revenue, which the city may use to start a jitney service and perhaps establish outlying parking areas to relieve downtown congestion. But for now, those ideas are still in the talking stage. On Nov. 23, the city Planning Board did r^gommend that more off-street parking be provided, and added that it wouldn't be a bad idea to hire a transportation consultant.

Woodbine OKs Toum Watch WOODBINE - Some 27 members of the community came out in freezing sleet last Wednesday night to help organize A Town Watch in the borough. "Some elderly people couldn't come tonight, but this is an excellent turnout." Sheriff-elect James Plousis, told the gathering in town hall. "I heard you had a good crowd last week I hope we get some more of them back next month on Jan 16 when we'll organize the block captains with the mayor." Besides the bad weather, attendance was also hindered that night by a bus excursion to Atlantic City, sponsored by the local American Legion, Mayor Ernest Materio said Plousis, who said he was a Woodbine policeman seven years ago and will soon resign from the Ocean City police force to assume his new duties as county sheriff, showed a film on burglary prevention and handedinit literature to the crowd. "Half of all crimes in Woodbine the past two years have been violent crimes." Plousis said "We can't do much about that, but we can go after the nonviolent crimes with Town Watch.'; There were 54 burglaries in the community during 1982, and 46 least year, Plousis said. The number of larcenies increased from 34 to 61 cases. Besides Materio, Councilmen Jose Rodriguez and Charles Payne were pre sent, but four other members of the town council did not show up for the second week in a row. The absentees were Council president Theodore DeSantis, Anthony Bogushefsky. William Pikolycky, and Seymour Benson. Sw CwpM Fer 50$off Ob Classified Page
