DEAR DR. BEITMAN, My doctor said I bad honeymoon cystitis and put me oo an antibiotic to get rid of the terrible burning pain I bad during urination and the constant need , to urinate. I took the pills until the symptoms went away and now they have returned. Why didn't the pills completely cure the problem? S.G., Woodbine

DearS.G.: I The information in your I letter is somewhat sketchy, I but there are a few basic I principles that you may not I have applied in following I your doctor!* advice. I First, by taking the an- I tibiotic until the symptoms I went away and then stopp- I ing it, you may very well I have created a situation I where the bacteria were I still present in small quan- I tity, or weakened condi- I tion. After the antibiotic I was stopped, the bacteria I began to multiply once I again to the point where I you began to feel ] symptoms. I THE CRITICAL principle here is that whenever an antibiotic is prescribed for you, you should completely finish toe bottle. This ensures that you have taken a "therapeutic dosage," one suffient to totally -wipe out the bacteria, even if you are no longer symptomatic. The only reason not to finish' taking the full "course" of 4e medicine would be if yoAexperience unpleasant side\ffects or an allergic reacti®, either of which should.be promptly reported to your physician so that an alternate medication can be selected for you. THE SECOND possibility in your case is that you may not have faithfully followed all the prevention advice given by yeur.physician. Have you been careful to urinate after sex, avoid tight clothing, nylon undergarments, and wear

undergarment fabrics which will "breath" with ytiur body? Do you make a habit of drinking fluids throughout the day, so as to not let urine stagnate in your bladder? If you did follow the preventive advice, as well

as finish your antibiotic, then it is possible that there may be a structural problem in your urinary tract that needs detection, or that you have simply picked up another urinary tract infection. , Seek' proper treatment

for your new infection. If you find them recurring frequently, you may decide with your physician to seek further tests to took for the possibility of underlying problems. Dr. Beitman. Middle Kills \ Grants Post COURT HOUSE — The $20,700 job of Middle Township grants coordinator will remain vacant. The post was abolished last Wednesday by the Township Committee, saying the job had outlived its usefulness. The grants are just not there anymore from Washington," said Commitljieeman Charles Leusner, who indicated that total annual expenditures for the local job run between $35,000 and $40,000. f f L "I recommend that be a part-time thing, V Leusner added. . , But Mayor Michael Vol! ' recommended otherwise, suggesting that any further coordinating of grants could be handled on a consultant basis, using present township staff. "I don't think we can afford a grants program anymore." Voll said. The full-time position became vacant when Barbara Beitel resigned on Nov. i6, complaining that she didn't have enough help to get the job done, after holding toe civil service post since 1977
