Goshen Fire District Expected in January
By JOE ZELNIK GOSHEN - For residents served by the local volunteer tire company, some good news and some bad news. The good news: Goshen is likely to break away . from Fire District No. 1 (Court House) and have its own Fire Districi No. 4 in Middle Township. "Hie bad news: the fire tax probably will be doubled from the current rate of 10 cents per $100 of, assessed valuation (now paid to District No. 1) to 18 or 20
cents, according to Goshen Chief William Frame. He called the tax increase necessary, since more money is a prime reason for creating the new district. But he also called it "kinda said, it really is." Frame personally favors one fire district and one identical tax rate for all of Middle Township's $10 million in ra tables That philosophy is not popular with many firemen and Frame got clobbered when he ran for Fire District No 1 commissioner a fewyears ago. GOSHEN IS an indepen dent company covering its area for District No. 1, in Court House For this, No 1 paid Go6hen $14,000 last year plus the cost of truck and heating fuel But Goshen asked for $23,000 and tried to make up the difference between its request and what it got — as a line item in No l's budget — with cake sales, raffles, square dances, pizza and beer nights The 22-member companyhas two pumpers (a '60 Ford and '78 Chevy) and answered 16 alarms in 1983 No 1 responds to all Goshen's structure fires FRAME PAINTS a striking contrast between his independent company and fire districts that levy their own taxes "Just look at their trucks," he said. "We don't have fancy ginger trucks with chrome to win parade trophies You spend a lot of money doing that We argue about repairing our roof and they argue about pin-stripping their truck " One of the questions that a separate Goshen Fire District No. 4 brings up a paying off a District No. 1 bond issue voters okayed in November for a $310,000, 110-foot ladder truck The district also purchased a $150,000, 2,800-gallon pumber earlier this year Frame said Goshen, wanting more control over its finances, had a choice of
becoming a substation to District No. 1,. which would have given it no rights, or creating its own fir* district. IT CHOSE the latter and got about 250 signatures on petitions favoring the move Frame said it only needed 171 signatures. IS percent of the voters in District No. 1. Township Clerk George Simpkins is currently validating those signatures Assuming they check out, the Township Committee and District No. 1 already have indicated approval, Frame said So, the new district could be formed early next year and an election held in February for five commissioners and a proposed budget District No.l levies 10 cents per $100 of assessed valuation and had a $132,135 budget in 1964. No 2. Rio Grande, a 14 4-cent rate and $81,000 budget. No 3, Green Creek, a 19-cent rate and $52,286
