SALEM'S LOT (Warners) "NR" Movies that have been adapted from Stephen King novels have met .with mixed results. The modern master of the macabre has suffered at the box officebecause of bad directors, silly screenplays, or, in some cases when the film actually worked, rotten luck Artistically, one of his greatest successes has to be the made-for-television feature Salem's Lot Unlike most television productions that would insult the in-' leliigence of a fiye-year-old, this modern day vampire tale is genuinely scary IT HAS a tight script and firm direction that allows the story to unfold naturally The acting is consistently strong with solid performances from David Soul and James Mason. The only drawback to Salem's Lot is having the vampire look exactly like the legendary vampire Nosferatu. Still, Salem's Lot is a highly entertaining film that works well on video tape MAN WHO FELL TO earth (RCA/COLUMBIA) "R" Rock singer David Bowie made his film debut in this very complex science fiction story Bowie portrays an Alien who comes to Earth to try to find a^ay to
get water to his planet, which is rapidly running out of water .« Bowie, through inventions, quickly makes a fortune to help bring his dreams pi saving his planet to reality. Unfortunately, he's soon attracted to the more decadent aspects of our society and that, coupl-- _ ed with government interference, results in his empire and hopes crashing down around him The Man Who Fell To ' Earth demands close attention, but the effort is well • worth it, as it's a fine movie. Bowie is excellent in the lead role, as are his supporting cast of Rip Torn x and Buck Henrv. SCIENCE FICTION buffs might want to pick up the book Omru's Screen I Flights. Screen Fantasies ( Doubleday /Dolptyn ) This i is a fun to read, informative collection of essays > by some of the top minds in » science fictin. : Filmmakers/authors/dii rectors/critics/script ') writers/etc tackle various subjects that give a well ) rounded and sharp critical f slant to films that deal with our unknown future. Worth p the price alone are the 5 photographs, many of which have never been s published before. This o would make an excellent o Christmas gift
