Gift Brightens Hospital

SOMERS POINT - Five years ago Erving Newborn gave his first gift to Shore Memorial Hospital, a gift that has become tradition, a gift that epitomized the meaning of the holiday season Starting on Christmas Eve the hospital halls are filled with Newborn's gift, his fellow worshipers from the Emeth Shalom Synagogue in Margate Filling in for all nonprofessional Christian staff, these holiday volunteers can be found helping out in the kitchen, manning the information desk, working in the emergency room and caroling in the halls ONE. RETIRED physician Dr Harry Goodman, can be found m a Santa suit, handing out candy canes to pediatric patients When his wife Rena died in September. 1980. Newborn, an Ocean City businessman, wanted a special way to thank the hospital staff for the care and kindness received "Everyone was so fantastic." he recalled. "So darn nice that I wanted to repay them." Knowing that some city hospitals have a similar program, Newborn presented the idea to Rabbi Seymour Rosen of the Emeth Shalom Synagogue. "IT'S A wonderful act of brotherhood and sisterhood," offered Rosen, "It gives you a wonderful feeling and shows that people of all faiths can work together Each year more members of the congregation have signed up to volunteer for the holiday, many more than is needed This year Newborn has taken on Myer Feldman to help and serve as his cochairman

"Everybody really looks forward to it." Newborn added "We sing carols and just enjoy ourselves " This gift from the Jewish

community is more than just a day off for Christians, points out Mary Petnwis. director of volunteer services at Shore Memorial
