Avalon Tourney Winners
AVALON - The Greater Avalon Fishing Tournament sponsored by the borough for 1964 and conducted by Frank Hoiberg, Bob Moran and Phil Judyski, came to a close Nov. 30. There were 106 fish entered: 82 blueftsh, 25 founder, 15 weakftsh plus a variety of other types. This was a good year for kingfish, flounder and weakfish, along with the ever popular bluefish. THIS YEAR'S tournament consisted of two _ fish caught out of a boat in the bay or ocean and fish caught in the surf, from a pier or rock pile. There were 15 awards for the first class, five awards for the second class, and two special fish awards for a total of 20 awards. All awards are the same as last year's: a silver plaque bearing the Avalon logo with the name of the fish in "blue lettering mounted on mahogany. The tournament fishing committee --and the Borough of Avalon praised the official weighing stations for their cooperation. They, are: Avalon Anchorage Marina, Avalon Fishing Pier, Smugglers Cove in Stone Harbor, Hodge Podge Bait and
Tackel, Sylvester's Fish Market and Hook, Line and Sinker. Next year the committee ^ hopes to provide first and second prize awards for flounder, weakfish, bluefish and kingfish. as these arc the most commonly caught fish. Striped bass will no longer receive, an award as they are now in a serious decline. WINNERS IN the. tournament were: Boat — Bay and Ocean: 1. Indoor Net Play Gives Renza Win COURT HOUSE t- High School League action in team tqnnis saw* some tough competi/ion at Jersey Cape Racquet Club • as Mike Renza 's team and Dan McMahon's ttam faced each other on the'second Sunday of competition. Renza 's team took the lead as Anthony Tyne and Scott Smith had a solid 8-4 win in the men's doubles event. McMahon's ladies singles player, Liz Buchanan, fought right back to give ber team an 8-6 victory over Kelly Weeks. It was a disappointing afternoon for McMahon as defaults in both the women's doubles and the mixed doubles events gave Renza an easy lead. Undaunted, the team cap: | tains, McMahon and Ren • za, faced each other for the final showdown in men's singles. When play had ended, McMahon emerged the winner in this event by the slim margin of 9-8. The win wasn't enough to give his team the advantage, however, as Renza 's team went home the victor by a score of 38-21.
