The Golden Edge I An Early Childhood Recollection

i By DOROTHEA F. COOPER g • jj| In our early childhood we m lived in a neighborhood of 5 tall office buildings which £ during the day were bright- $ ly lit and filled with buzzing jg activity. In the evening they were dark and silent. On the very top floors of many of these buildings liv- -| ed some of our school friends with their families. At night the parents and older members would come down to sweep, dust, brush and polish the offices , { in preparation for the «- k following day's business, f In the same area were older tall buildings on the top floors (unheated most likely) of which many aspiring writers, musicians and artists lived and worked and practiced, hop- -• ing for that big break.

ONE NIGHT a cousin of my mother came to visit, bringing along his friend, an artist who lived in one of these series. In the course of conversation, the artist mentioned that he was working on some illustrations for a publishing house nearby. He needed a model for the front cover of a young boy's magazine and was very impressed by my brother's curly blond hair and brown eyes, and would my mother perhaps give her permission for Mike to pose^for him. ^ He hastily explained that he had very little money (he later became very famous) but it would be for only a few after-school hours (home before dark of course) and one Saturday morning. The cousin assured Mama that his friend whom he had known for years was of excellent character. So Mama agreed and Mike was delighted and couldn't wait for the sessions to begin. FINALLY the painting was finished, a week before Christmas. Mike was paid an enormous sum! (Let's hope he said "Thank you" — politeness was always a must in our clan. ) before he ran all the way home to flourish his wealth to his amazed siblings: A FIVE DOLLAR BILL! Mike immediately wanted Mother to go with him to buy presents for everyone in the family, but was finally persuaded to put aside his money for special things.

And oh, those special things! How many times they came up: movie money and gocxiies to go with it, a pair of stockings for our mother, a new pair of shoes (actually he was going to get them anyway for he needed them, with the sole of his right shoe flapping in the wind) etc., etc., etc. Mike would say proudly and magnanimously "Take it out of my five dollars." THEN ONE DAY after countless expenditures he

said "Mom,* I guess my money is all gone." And Mama said "Yes, son, it is." And he replied "That was a lot of money!" And our mother certainly ^agreed. On Christmas day and always, may God's blessed gifts to you be as rich -and inexhaustible as my brother's five dollar bill. (ED.
