"Jazz is only a word and really has no meaning ... I don't know how such great extremes as now exist can be contained under one heading". ' (Duke Ellington) Examples of those extremes are included in both the book and record form within the collection of the Cape May County Library. The Jazz Book; From New Orleans to Rock and Free Jazz by Joachom Berendt discusses the various styles of jazz from 1890 to 1970. This overview will lead to exploration of sounds available from the record section such as: New Orleans Jazz in the 20's which includes rare and little known jazz performances of such early groups as the New Orleans Owls, Celestin's Original Tuxedo Jazz Orchestra, John Hyman's Bayou Stampers, Jones & Collins Astoria Hot Eight and many others. Jive at Five ; the StylemakersifJazz 1920' s - 1940's chronicles the changes in jazz style after the World War 1 closing of Staryville and the exodus of the musicians after the World War I closing of Staryville and the exodus of the musicians to the nor-, thern city of Chicago. IT INCLUDES recordings of Johnny Dodd's Black Bottom stampers, Jimmie N'oone's Apex Club Orchestra, Earl "Father" Hines, Baby Dodd's Trio, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and the Benny Goodman Sextet. Jazz in Revolution shows the evolving split among the musicians — the tradiuic luusiuiaiu — uiv uuui
tionalists vs. the moderns, the accessible, danceable, pulsing swing and the sometimes chaotic free jazz abstractions. This album includes Harlan Leonard and his rockets, Bill Eckstine and his orchestra, Lionel Hampton and his orchestra, Kenny Clarke and his 53rd Street Boys and others. JAZZ VOCAL style is almost impossible to define and is treated retrospectively in When Malindy Sings: Jazz Vocalists 1938-1961. Some of the all time greats are included on this album such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Betty Carter and many others. Okeh; Chicago Blue is the reissue of recordings from the Okeh studio bet-
ween 1918 and 1969 concentrating on black jazz groups. Curtis Jones, Muddy Waters, Victoria Spivey, the Yas Yas girl and many others. The World of Duke Ellington by Stanley Darce is a composite portrait of a musical genuis and an authentic record of American jazz over the years. Duke: The Girl's Suite and the Perfume Suite is a record albimi which contains one suite frequently played in public and the other never heard in its entirety outside the recording studio. We Want Miles and Star People are both recordings of Miles Davis that have recently been added to the library's jazz collection. While the book, Riding On A Blue Note; Jazz and American Pop by Gary Giddens relates "how performers originally perceived as racial (Crosby, Basie, Presley) became conservative institutions, how Charlie Parker created a masterpiece from the strain of an inane ditty and how the Dominoes helped combine church ritual with pop music. The spectrum of modern jazz is represented in the albums of Church Mangione's Journey to a Rainbow, Cecil Taylor's The World of Cecil Taylor. and Jean Luc Ponty's Mystical Adventures. So if jazz is your passion, read about it, listen to it, borrow sheet music and play it, but add to your enjoyment at the County Library.
