Since the demise of the highly influential late 60s band The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed has had an up-and-down
solo career, both artistically as well as commercially. Fortunately, his latest album New Sensations (RCA) is an exciting piece of work.
Reed's vocals are sharp and demanding and this new batch of songs is far from being passive. It's unfortuante his regular guitarist Robert Quine isn't along this time, but Reed does a commendable job handling the lead guitar chores. There's nothing better than a Reed album that captures the artist in the right light. HANK WILLIAMS was only 29 when he died in 1953, yet he remains country music's greatest influence and barometer for artistic achievement. The reason for this hold over country music is evident in the must-own just issuedffafTk-'williams 40 / Greatest Hits (PolyGram). I Williams was a gutsy, emo- ' tional singer, who wrote painfully honest songs. The rawness in his performances show his obvious influence on early rock and roll. Besides great music, this double album has informative liner notes and some nice photographs. Once hearing this, many of Sounds readers will want to pick up its companion release Rare Takes & Radio Cuts (Polygram). This single album consists of out-takes and live radio performances. The sound quality might be a bit uneven; but the music makes up for it nicely. Let's hope PolyGram will continue to put out Hank Williams music. Thelonious Monk was one of the most original and exciting pianists/composers/band leaders jazz ever saw. His early days were panned by the critics who didn't understand his complex melodies and unusual chord changes. Later on, when they finally got a grip on the fact he wasn't making mistakes, just redefining jazz, he berame a critic's favorite. Now, the late performer has become a legend. That's The Way I Feel Now (A&M) is a loving tribute to this great musician. Over the course of four sides various rock and jazz performers play the music of Thelonious Monk. Highlights are' too numerous to mention here, but a special nod should go to the cuts by Carla Blew NRBQ, Todd Rundgren/Gary Windo, Terry Adams & Friends, and Steven Lacy/Elvin Jones.
