Be Nourished by the Glory Adam's First Hanukkah
By GAIL MILGRAM BEFTMAN Dear Adam: In a few days you will experience your first Hanukkah. I can anticipate how full our hearts will be, as we light the menorah for the first time as parents with our first child. You'll be attracted to the colorful candles, their flickering glow and the beautiful melodies of the benedictions. As the years go by you will recognize the odor of "latkes ( potato pancakes ) in the air, as the traditional food for our holiday table. In addition to the simple, beautiful customs and many myths and stories, is the powerful history of this holiday. Hanukkah in fact commemorates a major military victory of the Jews over the Syrian portion of the Greek empire (called Seleucid\ which at the time of the Hanukkah story governed the area which today is called Israel. Not unlike modern day Israelis who, as survivors of the terrible holocaust in eastern E'irope had to learn to use new tools to survive, so too did the Jews under the Greek Empire. THE GREEKS BELIEVED in spreading their culture and religion to all areas they conquered. This was done through edict, force, intermarriage, and dwelling of Greeks with many different peoples. Each area of the Greek Empire had different administrators assigned to it, each such ruler reigned based,on his own managerial style. Unfortunately the ruler of the Seleucid portion of the empire saw fit to brutally force Greek practices on all the peoples , of his region. The Jews he required to kneel to graven images and eat the flesh of the pig, which is forbidden in the Five Books of Moses, and to give up their religious laws for Greek law. Not to do so was punishable by torture and death. Some of the Jews in this domain felt it their obligation to God not to break the laws of Judaism, even if it might mean their death. They gathered in the Judean hillside and learned to use new tools, weapons, to prepare to defend themselves against those who would have them blaspheme theii religion. To make matters worse, the Great holy Temple built by King Solomon for worship to God was taken over by the Greeks for festivals to their pagan gods. THESE BRAXE PEOPLE who grouped together in the hills planning Srategv based on their knowledge of the land are known as "Maccabbes," named after the founding family of the rebels. TTiey rallied many Jews to their cause, although not all, as a great many had fallen in to the ways of the Greeks in order to be better accepted into Greek society. Over the course of 25 years, the Maccabbees staged attacks from the hills, gathering more and more followers. They outwitted and defeated the amazed Greeks time after time, as the Greeks were unfamiliar with Jews acting as soldiers and with unconventional warfare from the hills. The Maccabbees were actually able to recapture the holy temple in Jerusalem, cleanse it, and rekindle the large menorah there. Thereafter they enjoyed a period of selfgovernment under a treaty of friendship with Rome, by then the new dominant world power. It was these very Romans who would later drive the Jews out of Judea (Israel) intp dispersion through the world. ADAM, TOO OFTEN in Jewish history you will find stories of persecution, disbursement from our lands of l| residence be they Israel, Spain or Germany, and in3 tolerance by others to our religious beliefs.
Adam With His First Menorah
The Hanukkah story has endured for some 2100 years through celebration of the lighting of the Hanukkah lights (in the menorah), as a reminder to us and possibly other nations, of our will and ability to survive. Someday, Adam, you too will be nourished by the power and glory of Hanukkah. I only pray that your Hanukkah lessons will all be lived in peace. Love, Mom (ED. NOTE: Gail and husband Robert of Marmora welcomed Adam to their family on May 15).
