Rx . * Health Watch ~ by Dr. Robert C. Beitman The warning signs and significance of bladder cancer are today's topic in our series on urinary tract disorders. This is the most frequent cancer of the urinary tract, affecting some 30,000 Americans each year. Most frequently it is found in persons between the ages of 50 and 70. It is twice as common in whites than blacks, and four out of every five persons affected are male. EARLY DETECTION of bladder cancer can help you survive, rather than joining the 10,000 Americans who die * of it annually. One of the tragedies of this disease is that often individuals know their urinary symptoms are irregular , but they wait years until they have severe discomfort before reporting it to the doctor. By this time it is often very late and treatment results may not be effective. Blood appearing in your urine is the key warning sign of bladder cancer. For a long time it may be the only warning signal you get. YOU MAY bleed a lot or a little; the blood may aPP®*r in the stream of urine or just in the toilet bowl. The amount of blood is not an indication of how advanced the disease is, so don't let that frighten you. You may also experience some discomfort when you urinate and/or find you need to urinate quite fiequently. Sometimes there may be clots of blood which cause painful bladder muscle spasms. Blood may appear because the cancer is altering the normal structure of the bladder. OTHER CONDITIONS may also have blood in the unne, these include infection, bladder stones and benign tumors. Certain occupational groups are at greater risk for bladder cancer. These include those who work with "aniline dye", which is used in the rubber and cable industries. ^ In the 1930's a compound called "betanaphthylamine was found to be cancer causing. Included in this family of dye agents known as "^■Utic hydrocarbons" are ben- . zidine, aurimine, aunu^Ptc, 4-nitrodipheny and others. RESEARCH showed that these chemicals, when absorbed into the bloodstream, are converted into substances which are channeled into the urine. Since the bladder stores the urine, it is the area which comes in contact with the cancer-causing substances the longest. Much of the controversy over the safety of saccharin is in regard to its having caused cancer in rats. Smoking has been shown to be associated with an increased incidence of bladder cancer, as well. Smokers have a 7 to 10 percent increased incidence of bladder cancer Next week: Bladder Cancer, Part n. Health Watch is a public education project of the C ape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society, of which Dr. Beitman is president-elect.
