Seasides Brighten Holidays

By JOHN DONOHUE WILDWOOD — For 40 ' years, holiday food baskets i have been distributed to needy families in the Wildwoods by succeeding 1 generations of teenage girls who call themselves the Seasiders. "It's all girls from Wildwood High School, -although it isn't sponsored by the school,"' said Lori Schmidt, 18, the group's president. "Two mothers serve as proctors. We get names of

needy families from organizations and distribute food baskets at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter." The Seasiders are also in the middle of a toy drive for children. And, after the New Year, "we'll be visiting homes for the aged," Lori said. THERE ARE 29 GIRLS, freshmen to seniors, in the group, she said. "We do have a good amount of toys already, but we have 16 families we're going to give toys to. The

group serves North Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and West Wildwood. I've been a Seasider all four years," Lori added. The girls get together in their spare time to gift wrap the donated toys. Lori's mother, Betsy Schmidt, is one of the proctors. Last Saturday, the Seasiders went door-to-door collecting money to buy food for the Christmas baskets they will also be distributing. "For Thanksgiving, we had trouble getting many names and only gave away five food baskets," Lori said. "In many cases, organizations are reluctant to give out names of families without their permission. But we have had better success for Christmas this year with a list we got from the Civil Defense Department." "Since we didn't have that many families for

Thanksgiving, we went all out. We gave them everything from soup and salad to turkey and dessert. The families prepare the dinners themselves." Session Set COURT HOUSE - High School students and their parents interested in exploring opportunities of fered by the United States Air Force Academy and Air Force ROTC are invited to "Meet The Cadets." 1-3 p.m. Sunday. Dec. 30, in the County Library meeting room here. A local Air Force cadet and Air Force ROTC students will discuss academics, athletics and military life. An orientation film will be shown and light refreshment will be avialable. Call Mj. Jeffrey Vecere, Air Force Liaison officer, at 465-5175 to register.

Making a List, Checking it Twice

WILDWOOD - It isn't as easy as you might think to give away free food baskets around the holidays. Some people are too proud to accept them. Others make such a habit of taking free food thatthey get black-listed. Besides, there are so r many holiday drives sponsored by groups that overlap one another, it can 1 be difficult coding up with L much of a list. * "The thing with Wildwood is, it's over-done in the food thing," said David F. Quinlan, of Cape Human Resources, the private people-helping agency. Churches and various * (*nmmnnit\f Arrronivofinnc *

"want to help those who need it most, but nobody is 1 starving," Quinlan said. r "And when the same names show up year after year, they're taken off." "Sometimes, the neediest people are the ones the agencies don't know about, because the people don't want them to," he added. "Your neediest people are shutins," he said. EMERGENCY HEAT AND emergency food are the biggest year-round needs, and toys for children at Christmas are always in demand, Quinlan said. "There's not a large need as far as turkey goes. We do have a need for toys, yes, because we have day care programs and HeadStart programs," Quinlan added. "I do see the toy aspect stronger this year." While holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas have traditionally brought outpourings of food baskets from

communities, in the spirit of sharing social agencies tend to take a clinical view. "'The agencies are not just trying to provide help at the holidays, but on a year-round emergency basis. When you have the same names show up on lists for food baskets year after year, that indicates they need help in money management, so that's where we go in and try to help them with that," Quinlan said. "It isn't that they don't have any money coming in— they do. After a year or two, the same people are going to come off the (food basket) list," he said.
