Sanctity of Life Scheduled Sunday * •
More than 40 churches in Cape May County will join Sunday, Jan. 20, in the observance of Sanctity of Human Life Sunday.
The worship service is to uplift the sanctity and dignity of human life, an historic teaching of the Christian Church, say the sponsors. The date is the Sunday closest to Jan. 22, marking the 12th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision which requires that abortion be legally available on demand. LOCAL ORGANIZER Rod Girgan pointed out that there are other churches not included on the\Jist, though they are concerned with the issue of abortion-on-demand and will address the issue in 'Other ways or at other times. It was also noted that the Catholic Church has taken a clear and firm stand for life. LARRY DALTON
Alumnus of the Moip The '60s was a decade of change and tiAnoil. New values were being established and £ numerous demonstrations, whicij sometinfis turned into riots, were hejd throughout th%_ countrv. And law enforcement became more comMex* and challenging. In 1967. the United Statesn Crime Commission published an extensivef report that outlined steps that should be taken to improve the quality of law enforcement, ft- | Maj. Larry Dalton, who was then a patrolman in Lower Township, explained: "The report recommended that everv police officer shaflld have a two-year law enforcement cec^jficnlon ' and a background in the social sciene^^^k According to Larry, the handwriting wasjMi the wall. "If you were going to be successM in . the law enforcement field, you had to get M education," be said. i In 1970, at the age of 31. Larry enrolled hi Cumberland County college's Law Enforcelnent Program. He was a full-time student during the day and worked as a detective from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. "The schedule was exhausting," the Lower Township resident recalled. "But it was a veryworth while period in my life. The lessons I learned at Cumberland helped me to become a better law officer." By taking law enforcement and social sciences courses at CCC, Larry began to realize why communitv trends were occuring and what factors motivated people toward certain behavior. "If you can determine why a situation happens, "you can know more effectively how to deal with it," Larry said. The alumnus noted that education has enabled him to achieve career upward mobility. He feels CCC's Law Enforcement program provided an excellent preparation for taking difficult civil ** service examinations. After passing tests in 1973, Larry was pro- , moted to sergeant, then to captain at the Lower Township Police Department. In addition to an associate degree at CCC. Larry has earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Glassboro State College and has completed graduate courses at the University of Virginia through the FBI Academy. ; Larry has served in the New Jersey Air National Guard for the past five years, and last Ju- s ly he began working there full-time as chief of base services for the 177th Fighter Intercepter Group. In October, this group placed first in several categories at the William Tell Air to Ab* Combat Competition, an international competition held at the Tyndall Airforce Base in Florida. "I'm extremely proud of our entire operation," Larry said. "Even though they're 28 years old, our airplanes look like they just came off the asssembly line." We're Proud of Our Alumni ^
