on the mark by Mark Mattern .-~r~ * Father-Son Team Leasts Lower Cape \ _l. I nine in lh» WPPl( Later
Looking around the various stories to lead into the 1988 sports year. I wanteCr to start things off with jwhat appeared to be the' most important, and one that we could follow as the year progresses. That one story involves a basketball player from Lower Cape May. T It appears that the father-son combination of George and Pat Holden will make its mark on the Cape Atlantic League II hoop race. With dad doing the coaching and son doing the scoring. Lower Cape May got off on the right foot in 1985 'with a stunning win over St. Augustine. 94-68 I believe Holden, (Pat that is) is quickly becoming a player some Division 1 college teams will take a look at Against St. Augq§tine. Holden hit for a career high 42 points, putting the Capers at 2-0 in the league
and on top of the standings. It's hard to overlook all those points, but along with his 16 field goals and 10 free throws, Holden came up with 10 assists. Now tfiat's something unheard orfrom a high school player who scores a lot. Recently. I watched the St. Joseph s-Temple game on the tube and the thought of Holden fitting into the • contest kept running through my mind. They have the three-point goal in Atlantic l6 and Holden is the type of player who could make some hay in that kind of competition. RIGHT NOW. I think Holden could fit into many different programs as he is the most complete player yl've seen in a while. As I said before, its something we'll have to watch as the year grows old. In other action around the county, things are go-
ing pretty good for the locals. Loy Ehlers came up with 12 second-half points to lead Wildwood to a 53-49 win over Sacred Heart. The Warriors found themselves down by two points going into the fourth quarter, but Ehlers led the comeback with his scoring and rebounding. Mike Schafer chipped in 18 points for Wildwood as it upped it record to 5-2 on the season. MIDDLE TOWNSHIP boosted its record to 5-1 last week with a 57-53 win over Absegami. The Panthers used a balanced attack to take care of the Braves. Bill Balliette and Mike Watkins each scored 14 points. Wildwood Catholic got 24 markers from senior Joe Aita as the Crusaders carved out a 63-53 victory over St. Joseph. The score was tied at the half, and Aita led the surge for W.C. with eight points in the third quarter Bob Yelanfen scored a dozen points and Alex Mairone added 10. Holy Spirit's center Bob Martin roamed the lane for * 18 points as the Spartans crushed ocean City 81-41. Fritz Ferrell led the Raiders with 17 points. The loss marked the third against just one victory for Ocean City. i THE GIRLS from Ocean City seem to be going in the
opposite direction of the boys, as Holy Spirit fell vie- S tim in a 57-31 Red Raider !\ victory. a In picking up its fifth win c of the year. Ocean City held 1 Holy Spirit scoreless in a 1 24-0 streak in the second c quarter. Sue Becker Jed all scorers with 17 points and f Marge Bonnett finished \ with 14. * Jennifer Snyder was hot 1 for Middle Township last t week, hitting for 27 as the i Panthers cooled off Absegami, 78-46. Snyder topped teammate Melissa I Grant by a point for scoring honors as Middle took a i 13-point halftime lead and i never looked back. Speaking of hot, Janice Boyle was boiling against St. Joseph. The Wildwood Catholic Senior set a new school standard with 39 points in the 81-40 victory. THE OLD RECORD was set by Mary Gavin just last year at 38 points. With jhe victory, the Crusaders remained unbeaten at 4-0 in league play. Wildwood lost for just the second time against Sacred Heart. 55-40. Brenda Schmidt led the Warriors with 17 points. REMARKS: Brigham Young is not the , best college football team in this country. It got the position just by being undefeated against a bunch of poor teams. For the record, I think the ratings poll blew it two years in a row. Miami of Florida wasn't the top team last year, either. I think Oklahoma. Washington and Nebraska would all destroy the Cougars. Let's move on to wrestling now. where things aren't going quite so well. OCEAN CITY was the only team to pick Up two wins last week. The Red Raiders tripped Egg Harbor Township, 40-24, as they collected four pins including one by Trip Snyder in just 27 seconds Other falls were from Fred Lafella, Tim Givens. Bill Latella and Mike McGuire.
Later in the wjek Snyder, Givens, Todd and John Gunnels all won by pins in a 57-6 crushing of Middle Township. The Panthers had to forfeit six matches on the night. Wildwood Catholic got falls in two of the last three weight classes to - stop Atlantic City. 26-24. Steve Brad and Ed Haggerty got the pins to pull off the victory. Later, Egg Harbor Township bounced back to the Crusaders 42-27 . The Eagles used pins in six of the lighter weight classes to pull away from the Crusaders. WILDWOOD'S Aaron Myer was a lonely guy last week as the Warriors lost to St. Augustine, 63-3. Myer picked up the only win for Wildwood with a 13-5 decision. Q
Wildwood did a little better against Atlantic City, but lost, 42-18. Wildwood junior Peter Myer remained undefeated in the 169-pound class. MORE REMARKS: Congratulations go out to Laura Mossbrook of Court house for being named to the 1984 high school AllAmerica tennis team. Mossbrook is currently playing for University of Miami. I finally got one right. Before the National Football League season, I tabbed San Francisco and Miami to meet in Super Bowl XIX. Now is the time to pick the winner. After the defensive performance by the 49ers in the championship game, I like San Francisco to take the title. If they can stop Dan Marino, and no one has so far, the Niners will be the World Champs.

Shutout For Kona CAPE MAY - Kona Realty strengthened its hold on-first place with a four-game shutout of Sputh Jersey Champions. The scores were 15-3, 15-5, 15-7, 15-12. In the first game, the serves of Kona's Joanne DeCosta and Liz Fuller were too much for South Jersey's defense. The serves of Tasha Jordan proved to be the difference for Kona Realty in game two. In game three Kona was heading for a shutout as it . took a 13-0 lead. South Jersey put together a nice offense with good bumps by Laura Elston and served I by Cathie Docherty as they took seven straight points. South Jersey stayed close in game four behind the play of Jeanette Phillips and Karen Booth. Kona, however, held on to the lead throughout the game and swept the match.
