County Reorganizes Thornton Heads Board

A key to Thornton's success also was suggested during the 45-minute organization meeting for the new board Surrogate W. Robert Hentges recollected that, when Thornton was first appointed freeholder in 1976. he was told. "Stay out of the newspaper. Gerry, stayout of the newspapers." PULVINO administered the oath of office ft) Thornton and Frederick. Judge John F Callinan did the same for new Sheriff James Plousis. The mothers of Thornton and Frederick held the Bible during their swearingin last Thursday. Catanoso told the crowd in the Old Court House building that he left with "mixed emotions ; happy to have time to be with my family and friends, sad to leave friends of so manyyears." Catanoso told the audience made up primarily of elected officials' relatives and county employes. "1 want you to be my friends forever." THORNTON'S nomination as director was made by Frederick and seconded by Ralph Evans, and appeared unanimously. James S. Kilpatrick Jr. was reelected vice director. Each freeholder offered remarks, thanking Catanoso for his 21 years of service, praising the work of Adminretrator/Clerk Kathryn A. Willis, who also has retired, and acknowledging the support of coupty employes and the public. Normally effusive Freeholder William E. Sturm Jr. set some sort of record by limiting his own remarks to 20 seconds. „ Frederick called Cape May County "one of the most progressive counties" which, he said, "didn't just happen." It was the result, he said, "of unselfish cooperation, the dedication and help of ail of you. Let us know what your needs are."
