Four to Share I Grant, Costs

CAPE MAY - Four towns will share a 5200, 000 federal aid grant to rebuild sand dunes washed away during last spring's storm in Cape May. Cape May Point. Lower Township and West Cape May The towns will have to put only $12,500 of their money into the pot, with Cape May's share at about $3,750 •We're thinking of bring ing sand in. or dredging it from the Cape May Canal. City Engineer Bruce Graham said at a council workshop last Wednesday News of the grant, however, brought no cheers from Mayor Arthur Biomkvest or Councilman Adrian Capehart They felt there were too many loose ends for Cape May to appropriate $3,750 at this time. They saw it as a Pandora's pot. especially when they heard the city

engineer s ideas on bow the | $200,000 would be spent "At this point.'' Graham ; said. I'm looking at $67,000 in engineering costs. I'm thinking of aerial photography of the whole area " Then, there would be surveys, too. Graham added. •WE'VE HAD SURVEYS before." replied Biomkvest "As far as I'm concerned, it's half-assed! Pardon me!" The mayor didn't think much of the whole idea to rebuild the dunes in the first place "You can pour $200,000 into that < rebuilding the dunes i and the first storm will wash it away." he said. If that sounds like the project would be run by Cape May. it wouldn't be. Each of the four towns would cooceivably have its engineer helping to stir the pot. but who would own the

spoon" In Cape May. there is only about 1.000 feet of beachfront that would be restored with dunes City Manager Fred Coldren had a suggestion: "I think the sensible thing is for the towns to hire one N engineer I'll talk with the other towns and see, what they're doing " Capehart still had his doubts about the projects only gong to cost the city $3,750 "I'm afraid it will run deeper It's too much up in the air for me." he said. The mayor, the manager and Capehart talked about fixing a maximum figure of $5,000 but decided they really didn't have enough details about the project because the plans are "too vague " Until we get it straightened out. said Biomkvest. I'm not ln favor of authorizing it " The grant is awarded by the Federal Emergency Management .Agency . It puts up 75 percent of the total New Jersey picks up 75 percent of the local share but each town is supposed to do its own engineering for the project Health Unit Meets TodayRip GRANDE - The Cape May County Health Systems Agency Advisory Council, meeting today at the county Social Services Building here, was to appoint a committee to select a slate of officers for 1965-66 Also scheduled were discussion of the Februaryelection and establishment of the council's size. .4.4 RP Sponsors Florida Trip SEA ISLE CITY - Chapter 710.
