Cape May County high school basketball teams are really starting to make their mark. Almost every time a county team faces an opponent from outside, they come up with a victory. Last week, Wildwood came up with two victories, including one over rival Lower Cape May. Wildwood's defense did a job on high-scoring guard Pat Holden in a 66-57 win over Lower on the Warriors' home court. Gerald Wright came up with 13 fourth-quarter points as Wildwood pulled away. Wright ended up with 25 on the game and was aided by Paul Franco's 16 points and 16 rebounds. The loss marked the first league setback for the Capers as Holden could manage just 11 points. EARLIER IN the week, Wildwood and Lower Cape May both came up with wins over lesser competition. Wildwood got 20 points from Mike Schafer in a 55-51 win over St. Augustine. Wright chipped in 14 for the winners. At Hammonton, Tom Magill and Holden combined for 40 as Lower dumped St. Joseph 79 to 58. Balanced scoring seems to be doing the trick for Middle Township so far this season. The Panthers ran their record to 6-1 with a 59-46 victory against Buena. Mike Watkins, Bill BaUiette, Todd Saddler and Maurice Hubbard all hit for double figures for Middle. Watkins led the parade with 16 points. IT WAS ALSO a very good couple of games for the Crusaders of Wildwood Catholic. Following wins over Hammonton and Pleasantville, Wildwood Catholic stood at 5 and 3 on the season. Freshman Dan Leahy

highlighted the P-ville win with 20 points and Senior Joe Aita came up with 16 to lead all scorers in the Hammonton victory. Ocean City ran off a 32-21 advantage in the sec one. half as the Raiders zipped past Oakcrest 53-38. LET'S NOT forget the girls, who are more than holding their own in league play so far this season. Janis Boyle made sure Wildwood Catholic stayed unbeaten at 6-0 in the CAL II as she was the leading scorer in wins over Pleasantville and Hammonton. Jennifer Snyder hit for 30 points as Middle Township destroyed Buena 87-29. Debbie Leone added 22 and Melissa Grant knocked in 15 as the Panthers won for the sixth time in a row. At Erma, Wildwood had its way with Lower Cape May to the tune of 61 to 21. Audra Coleman topped the Warriors with 20 points. Brenda Smith scored 12 points and Frani Barcas has 10 in supporting roles. Quick pins highlighted wrestling matches last week. Lower Cape May got a pin in the 121-pound weight class from Eric Slickenger enroute to a 54-12 win over Wildwood. Grabbing falls for the Capers were Kurt Smucker, Rich Bew, Todd Randall and Dennis Cluff. In the 114-pound class, Tom Sims needed only 28 seconds to record a victory for Wildwood. Wildwood fell to 3 and 2 on the season following the loss.

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP fell to 1-5 with a 36-30 loss to Buena. Forfeits have hurt the Panthers all season and against Buena they had to give away five different matches. The Panthers posted a forfeit victory and got three pins, including a 3 .53 fall from heavyweight Steve Jones over Pat McGrogan. The final two classes provided 12 points for Middle to make the match close. P.J. Dawson picked up a pin at 2:28 in the 114-pound weight class for Wildwood Catholic, but it wasn't enough as the Crusaders fell to Hammonton 33-20. The Hammonton loss marked the fifth of the year against just one victory for Wildwood Catholic.

IT WAS A .500 week for the Ocean City swim team last week. The win came against Egg Harbor Township in a 113-59 rout. Mike Powell took the 50 and 100-freestyle events, Mary Garrett won the 200 and 400-free and Rob Astle was also a double Winner. later, the Itaiders were shown what it's like to blow out of the water at home.
