News Notes from — The Wildwoods Thomas Parsons 729-5768
* It was good to see the Wild wood String bind returning to town with heads held high' Since the band s inception, several years ago. they have yet to
experience an easy year, but. for the past two years they can boast of having strutted up Broad Street. New Year's Day of 1983 found the Wildwood String
Band first in'ime and next to last place at the finish — no money' This year, the band placed 25th out of 27 I bands, but took home a purse of (430. More importantly. th,e band has established" itSelf and maybe now the community support and involvement will ne there Also, if you are interested in "strutting your stuff up Broad Street with the band, just give Captain Frank Inverso a call at 729-6888! The band is always looking for talented musicians to join the committed ranks TWO OF THE Wildwoods' cutest little tax deductions recently celebrated their 5th birthdays with a festive gathering at Pizza Hut. Meghan and Jessica Fitzgerald. very obviously identical twins, were the guests of honor at the party hosted by their parents Tom and Jan Fitzgerald of Wildwood Crest. Coincidentally. the twins were the first two children born to the Fitzgeralds. who are both Wildwoodbased C.P.A.'s. so the first time around the Fitzgerald's received two deductions' Not to be outdone by the sage performance of 1980 with the birth of the twins, the third Fitzgerald child. Adam, was bom just as 1982 was coming to a close just in time to be counted on that "old 1040 form."' Some people just do everything right! COUNCILMAN O'Leary steps down to take a municipal job Ralph Johnson resigns as president of the North Wildwood Board of Education and takes O'Leary" s \council seat. Long-time Mayor Anthony Catanoso steps down and Councilman Lew Vinci resigns as councilman to assume the mayoral duties. In the brief span of one month. North Wildwood has a new mayor and onethird of the council seats will change hands! Interesting. and all of this without much public, political rancor and no
election. North Wildwood has proven that the -orderly system works and can be effective despite potential political undertows. All seems well as qualified people undertake the quality, execution of their respective positions' Seems like a shame to ruin it all with the scheduled elections this spring\ Absolutely nobody expects that to go so smoothly, but you never know ! COLD SPRING is not in the Wildwoods. and whfle that really isn't a startling revelation, it seems that it maybe if you looked at the registry of the Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star. Both aligned organizations are often frequented and joined by five Mile Beach residents ? For instance. Jim Ctjlins of Wildwood Crest Jwas master of the Cape iiland Masonic Lodge located in Cold Spring and his wife Pat is very active with the Cold Spring-based Eastern Star 156. Which brings me to the point of this "ditty", because Pat Collins would like everybody in the Wildwoods to know that the Eastern Star is having a pancake breakfast on Sunday. Jan. 27. from 8 a.m. to noon. Th®. breakfast will be held at the Masonic Temple on Seashore Road in Cold Spring, which isn't too far from Wildwood. really! If you need more information call 884-3302 Proceeds are applied to very worthwhile causes and Pat would just live to have dozens of "Islanders" join her for breakfast. I RECEIVED quite a bit of comment concerning the brief historical review in last week's column Never realized, but manyresidents are quite interested in the tangible t history of the Island. For those of you who are interested, one of the most unusual "pieces of old" can be found in Margaret Mace Public School. Just inside the school's foyer ls/Iarge wooden "mosaic" declaration of Independence. Years ago. as 'I was assisting in the establishment of the school's library. I noticed the wall r plaque and curiousity led me to investigate. It seems that the huge wall plaque : was a gift to the school [ from Henry Otten manyyears ago. While all of this doesn't seem too distinguishing, the plaque itself is a rarity ! Research indicates that the plaque was one of two completed by an obscure french ' artist. These "works of a [ lifetime' ' were then sold for f display. One remained in k France and one shipped to J the U.S. .and finally to Margaret Mace School The French edition was ) destroyed in a tragic fire ^ many years ago so the k Margaret Mace copy is the 1 only one in existence. Ini teresting, also is the fact ■ that while the plaque is 1 huge, covering the entirety OT of a wall, it is composed of N thousands upon thousands S| of individually cut and fit,1 ted pieces of wood! Also erf interest is that several of ■ i the com posit woods are ex eJI tinct so that a copy of the £|j plaque by another would be ^fl impossible!
