Middle Girls Notch 8th Court Victory
Basketball games for the Middle Township girls team quickly turn into hide-and seek contests. As Middle continues ease its way through the CAL II schedule, opponents can't find the Panthers after the early going. One of the reasons Middle is playing so well is that Jennifer Snyder is playing so well. Last week Snyder scored 65 points as Middle ran and hid in two easy victories Against St Joseph, the Panthers ran out to a 25-2 first quarter lead before the Wildcats knew the game was underway The Grant sisters backed Snyder in the 86-23 thrashing, as Mellisa scored 14 and Bev also came up with 14 points. Snyder finished with 30. PLEASANTVILLE got v the same treatment later in the week Middle Township romped 90-37 as Snyder hit for 35 points With the win the Panthers stood at 8-1 on the season Wildwood Catholic ran Its slate to 7-1 following one of its toughest contests of the year, a 41-37 victory over, Sacred Heart A tenpoint run at the start of the third quarter turned the trick as the Crusaders
overcame a 20-19 halftime deficit. JANICE BOYLE scored 16 points and Dorann Vallese added 13 in the Crusader win. It was . a match of unbeaten schools when Cumberland took the floor at home against Ocean City. When all was&aid and done, Cumberland stood atop the CAL I standings with a 7-0 record. AFTER A SLOW start. Ocean City battled back to, make a game of it before falling 53-50. Marge Bonnet led the Raiders with 15 points and Triah Levin chipped in 10. Ocean City fell to 8-1 in the league and 9-3 overall following the loss. Earlier in the week Ocean City slipped past Mainland, 39-30, with Lisa Crompton taking scoring honors with 14 points. Aiidra Coleman scored all but 17 points for Wildwood as the Warriors zipped Buena, 47-32. Coleman's 30 markers overshadowed an eight point performance from Frani Bracas. Lower Cape May couldn't put together any offense at all as it was overpowered by Absegami, 55-19.
Over in boys action, double overtime efforts gave Middle Township and Wildwood Catholic wins MIDDLE TOWNSHIP used free throws to escape with a 74-68 win over St. Joseph in double O.T. Maurice Hubbard sank a pair and Todd Saddler added four more in the second extra period. Saddler led all scorers with 23 and Mike Watkins hit for 21 in the winning effort. Bill Balliette came up with nine points down the stretch as Middle pulled off another win, a 64-56 thumping of Pleasantville. The Panthers upped their record to an impressive 8-1 with the win over the Greyhounds. Wildwood Catholic's double-dip overtime affair ended in a 73-66 win over Sacred Heart. Joe Aita's three-point play tied the game at the end of regulation. Dan Leahy pulled the Crusaders away, hitting for seven points in the second overtime. Later in the week, Chris Koch led the Crusaders with 10 points, but Catholic fell to St Augustine, 46-31. The Crusaders saw their record fall to 5-4. Mike Schafer paced the Wildwood Warriors with 31 points as they dropped Buena. 75-52. After one period. Wildwood led 20-8 and was never threatened. Gerald Wright hit for 12 points and workhorse Paul Franco pulled down 12 rebounds to go with his 10 points. PAT HOLDEN played his usual complete game to lead Lower Cape May to an 80-62 win over Absegami Holden scroed 24 points, went eight-for-eight from the foul line and dished out 10 assists. Backing Holden were Tom Magill with 17 and Sean Magee with 14 points. Lower upped its record to 6-3 with the win. Bridgeton got a 10-foot jumper from Kevin Jones with time running out to squeak past Ocean City 70-68 John McClellan paced the Raiders with 17 points. Later in the week. Ocean City fell to 4-7 on the
season following a 81-62 loss to Cumberland. Lower Cape May upped its record above the .500 mark in wrestling with a 48-6 thumping of Bridgeton. On the night, the Capers won all but two matches. The Capers received pins from Kurt Schmucker at 128 pounds, Todd Randle at 140 and Bob Smith in the heavyweight division. Lower improved its slate to 4-3 with the one-sided win over the Greyhounds. WILDWOOD COULD come up with just a couple of match wins last week, as it dropped two contests. In a 57-14 loss to Absegami, Jail Wallmark and Peter Mever were the only winners. Later, Robert Logan at 107 and Tom Simms at 114 recorded falls as the Warriors fell to Hammonton. 39-21.
Two local schools faced off last week and forfeits made the difference as Wildwood Catholic slipped past Middle Township, 33-31. Undefeated Crusatrer Steve Brad highlighted the evening with a pin of Steve O'Neill in the 169-pound match. At 187, Wildwood Catholic's Ed Haggerty gave the Crusaders the win with a pin over Andy Brockman. Heavyweight Steve Jones recorded the fastes fall of the night when he put Bob Sweeten on his back at 2:30. JONES' WIN did very little to offset three forfeits charged against the Panthers on the evening. Jones and teammate Brockman posted pins later in the week in a 40-15 loss to Oakcrest. In other action. Ocean Ci-
ty ran up against a tough St. Augustine squad and fell by a 36-24 count. Ocean City's Phil Lettela, wrestling at 157. took down BasU Ingemi in 45 seconds. REMARKS: \ That super match-up bet- \ ween the Philadelphia 76ers and the -Boston Celtics was not so super. The Celtics won the game and created yet another tie in the Atlantic Division. Ctemon Johnson was the only bright spot for the Sixers. What happened to Andrew Toney? The Super Bowl really showed how overrated Dan Marino was and how good the San Fransico 49ers are. Joe Montana and the Niners were at the top of their game and deserved to be called World Champs. I wonder how big the apple was that Marino choked on9
