1984 Tourney Winners
COURT HOUSE - Anglers from four states won awards in the 49th annual Cape May County Fishing Tournament which ended Dec. 31. The announcement came following a meeting of the judges at the Golden Eagle Hotel in Cape May. New Jersey residents took the biggest number of the prizes with anglers from Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania also listed among the winners, according to Freeholder Herbert Frederick, director of the Cape May County Department of Public Affairs. The tournament, which is now in its 50th year, is sponsored annually by the Board of Chosen Freeholders. IN SELECTING prize / winners, the judges awarded the rare fish division prize to Robert Templeton, of Norristown, Pa. for his 5-lb. spadefish. That rare fish, which is related to the Angel Fish, is normally found in tropical waters. It is rare north of the Chesapeake Bay. Also considered by the judges in the rare fish division were a longbill spearfish which weighed 20 lb. and a Spanish butterfly fish which weighed a half an ounce. F. Stratton of Avalon caught the butterfly fish and the spearfish was boated in Poorman's Canyon by Bill Shuda Jr., of Rio Grande. The judges also affirmed a policy which has removed the striped bass from the list of fish eligible for prizes. Over 30 species of fish caught in New Jersey waters get recognition in the year-round county event. Contest officials ruled that the striper was in serious condition and until the numbers of fish bounce back there would be no recognition awards or prizes in the county contest. BLUEFISH WERE the most popular of the fish entered in 1984 Some species showed potential for improvement in 1985
and future years, according to entries submitted by anglers who fished county waters in Delaware Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and the inland waterways. *" Fluke entries showed an increase, as did weakfish. The judges noted a better spread of weakfish in year classes than had been seen for several years, indicating that there were smaller fish being caught in bigger numbers. This has been interpreted to back up claims that better breeding has been recorded and that weakfish are definitely bouncing back. ONE FATHER and son duo combined to take prizes in two divisions Len Guthrie Sr. of Court House, caught a prize winning kingfish. His Pi-lb. king was matched by an identical Pi-lb. kingfish entered by his son, Len Guthrie, of Rio Grande. The younger Guthrie's king was an inch shorter, however. Len Sr. also took a prize in the largemouth bass division with a 634 lb. largemouth he caught in a pond off the Garden State Parkway. In the winter flounder division, Rick Zatavetsky topped the division with a 2^4 -lb. winter flattie. He bested his brother, Leo, who took second prize with a winter flounder which weighed 2 lb. 10 oz. The judges also created shark divisions for blue sharks, thresher sharks, makos, dusky sharks, hammerheads, tiger sharks and white sharks. Prizes were awarded for * the first time in these categories. Prize winners, who will be notified by mail, are : ALBACORE (True). 1st. Kurt Hof fmann. Pranklinville. 70 lbs . 2nd. David Runk.
