THE NATURAL (RCA/COLUMBIA) "PC". This charming, somewhat offbeat, hit film of '84 is perfect viewing for the entire family. Watching Robert Redford in the lead role of Roy Hobbs, a once promising baseball player trying to make it on the eve of his middle age after having his career cut short by a bullet, is a complete joy. Redford is convincing as a youth as well as an older man. He puts life and fire into the character of Roy Hobbs. With the bat Hobbs' carved by hand he makes it to the majors, overcoming his age, personal problems and the corrupt people who ■ were responsible for having b him shot 16 years earlier. ■ AIDING REDFORD in I making The Natural a sucI cess is the superb support- ■ ting cast of Barbara Hershev. Darren McGavin. and ■ especially the team of Richard Farnswogh and W'ilford Brimley, who bring to the picture some humorous moments The actual baseball games are realistic and larger than ( life, giving The Natural i even more excitement. One doesn't have to be a
baseball fan to enjoy The Natural. It's a simple, old fashioned story that's full of whimsy, pain and happiness. If you haven't seen it already then immediately check out this video. Those who have seen it will be coming back to it often. DR EAMSCAPE (Thorn/EMI) "PG". This science fiction film came and went with few noticing it. It's really too bad, as it's a strong, entertaining picture with a highly original story. Scientists are working on having psychics enter the dreams of others and becoming part of them. On the positive side this could cure people of mental problems that affect their day-Uxlay existence. On the other hand, secrets could be stolen, people killed, and world issues controlled by outside sources. Dream - scape moves at a brisk pace, has solid special effects, excitement and strong, capable acting — especially from star Dennis Quaid. Next time you're checking out videos to rent, try this one. DEA THSTALKER (Vestron) "R". Sword and 1
e sorcery fans will enjoy this d genre piece as it holds if together well. Its look and feel are believable, which is / t something most low budget / y pictures of this type sorely e lack. Those who don't like to e venture into the era of barbarians who live by the \ sword might be offended by V its violence and sexual s aspects. Others who are use ed to the themes covered in I Deathstalker will probably ? find this to be worth view- : ing. A FEW COLUMNS back I r recommended Jeffrey Forj Tester's book The Stooge Chronicles (Contemporary ; Books). Since then I disI covered Forrester along with Tom Hansen wrote » Stooge Manina (Contem- . porary). [ Unlike the previously reviewed work, this one isn't a history of the Three Stooges, but more a scrapbook with information on collectibles, bits of trivia, and reprints and newspaper articles on the zany Stooges. There's even one of their old unused scripts that in their original form are extremely rare. Stooge fanatics will want to add Stooge Mania to their bookshelf.
