7 Drop Money Market Minimum Bal. to $1,000
By JOSEPH R. ZELNIK Seven of the county's 15 financial iastitutions have taken advantage of related federal rules and dropped the minimum balance re quired on the money market deposit account from $2,500 to $1,000. That should make the popular account available to many people who previously had to be satisfied with passbook ac-
counts paying a maximum of 54 percent interest. The money markets, which change weekly, are now paying from 7.5 to 9 percent interest in the county. The minimum balance has been lowered by Collective Federal Savings & Loan. First Fidelity Bank/South 'effective Feb 1). First National Bank of Toms River, Heritage Bank. Midlantic Union Trust. New Jersey Na-
tional Bank and Security Savings & Loan. Security, it should be pointed out, is paying 6.5 percent interest on any account with a balance between $1,000 and $2,500, and the higher rate < currently 8 percent) only on $2,500 minimum accounts. OF THE SEVEN. Collective last week was paying the highest interest rate. 8.2 percent. It also has a money market passbook account with a $1,000 minimum which last week was paying 8.3 percent, a rate that changes about every other day That s one account I don't understand, but smart shoppers should at least check it out. Keep in mind that all these money market accounts do change the in terest rates weekly and can change daily Highest money market account interest rates continue to be paid by the county's two smallest savings and loans Crest Savings and Loan and First Savings and Loan were paying 9 percent last week, followed by 8 7 percent at Sturdy Savings & Loan With interst rates continuing to fall, some money is starting to flow back into the private, uninsured money market aeocunts that were the original source for much of the money deposited into the banks' insured money market accounts, introduc ed in December. 1982. THAT'S BECAUSE the private money markets, whose rates fall a little slower than the banks, are yielding a bit more than many of the banks. Assets ( of the privates total about , $220 billion. t Financial institutions. t champions of "deregula- j tion," seem in no rush to c deregulate"' their minimum deposit on o money market accounts i| because they figure much > of the "new" deposits will, in reality, come from their 7 own passbooks, which have h i
a total of about $300 billion. The money market deposit account permits six transactions a month: three deposits and three checks. There also is a so-called Super Now account at most of the institutions which is similar to the money market, but permits unlimited deposits and checks The highest rate in the county for that account is the 8 percent paid by Crest and First, followed by 7.5 at New Jersey National.
