i Fred Predicts Difficult Year

I By JOHN DONONHUE [ CAPE MAY - "We still I do Have a budget crunch j, There's no doubt this is go- | • ing to be a difficult year, f City Manager Fred Colf dren told the town council Monday night. The city also was informed by the New Jersey Department of Education • that its tax share of the Lower Cape May Regional School District has been raiSed to 32.2 percent, up from 30.9 percent last year Lower Township's share will be 62.6 percent, and West Cape May, 5.14 percent Percentages are based

on property values. Cape May's rose from $250 million to $278 million, Lower's from $510 million to $569 million and West Cape May's from $31 million to $38 million. There was also some bad news about how much temporary repairs will cost on Columbia Avenue's sewer main. That job would run $29,500 according to one contractor's estimate obtained by City Engineer Bruce Graham. The terra-cotta main began collapsing recently and an earlier off-the-cuff guess for repairs was $15,000 to $20,000. The main is more than 100 years old.

But a formal estimate, which included pick and shovel labor rates, caused Mayor Arthur Blomkvest to blink. "I'm a master mechanic, and I charge $25 an hour, and I see labor rates on here of $20 to $25 an hour." the mayor said. "That's the going labor

rate," replied Graham \ Bonding possibilities foK. permanent repairs will be\ available for Saturday \ morning's first special \ budget workshop at 10 \ • a.m., Coldren said. Another budget sessions is scheduled Sunday with two more the following weekend.

Shore Fund Bill i Backed By Muziani

T R E N T C N - Assemblyman Guy F Muziani. R-Cape May. Cumberland, reported he is supporting legislation introduced by Assemblyman Anthony M. Villane, Jr., RMonmouth, creating a "Municipal Shore Protection Trust Fund" usir.g 1/12 . of the state sales tax revenues from shore municipalities to pay for shore protection projects. "Stable funding for shore protection projects is a widely recognized need within state government." Muziani said "Traditional funding procedures using the sale of state bonds have not provided a level of funding required to implement long-term planning and complete many projects in a timely fashion "Allocation of a small

portion of the sales tax which is collected from retail sales in shore communities that will benefit most by this program is the fairest proposal to date among all of the ideas to come from a series of meetings which were held earlier this year with governmental officials in shore communities," Muziani said.

Cape Gets $680,000 Road Funds A total pf $680,000 has been awarded to Cumberland and Cape May County municipalities for road repairs by the 1984 New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund Authority Act. In Cape May County, municipality and project recipients include: Ocean City. Wesley Avenue, $160,000; Dennis Township. Corsons Tavern Road. $65,000; Middle Township, Railroad Avenue. $55,000; Avalon Borough. Dune Drive. $40,000. and Cape May Point Borough. Seagrove Avenue/Cambridge Avenue/Princeton Avenue, $38,250. Governor Thomas H. Kean signed- the $3.3 billion transportation program — New Jersey's largest public works project — in July, 1984. It is designed to provide the first stable source of transportation funding in the state's history.
