on the mark by Mark Mattern Panther, Caper Matsters Lose Tough Way

Middle Township did everything right against St. Joseph in wrestling only to lose the match by a default. What a way to lose! The Panthers overcame two forfeits and had the score knotted at 30-30 going into the last bout. Middle heavyweight Steve Jones sustained an injury and couldn't finish, giving the win to St. Joseph's, 26 to 30. Jones' knee injury was bad enough that Middle coaches felt it was best for him to quit before the injury got worse. Earlier, St. Joseph's Kelly Gabriel pinned Steve O'Neill in the 169-pound division to give the

Wildcats a six-point advantage. Andy Brock man erased the margin as the Panther 187-pounder pinned his opponent at 3:03, setting the stage for the default. IN OTHER action, Lower Cape May went into the final bout of the evening with a lead against Absegami only to see its hopes for a win dashed. Absegami s heavyweight Fred Jandras made short work of Bob Smith, pinning his opponent in 56 seconds and giving Absegami a 32-30 win. Capers Todd Randle (11-1-1) and Erik Simonsen both picked up falls to give

Lower the early lead. The Capers fell to 6 and 4 with the heartbreaking loss. Wildwood remained winless in league competition following a 42-24 loss to Buena. On the evening, Buena recorded seven pins to offset two forfeits given to the Warriors. PAT HOLDEN finally broke out of a semi-funk and he couldn't have done it at a better time. Holden canned 16 field goals to lead lower Cape May over Middle Township 74 to 58. Holden scored 14 of his game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter as the Capers pulled away and upped their record to 7 and 1. Earlier in the week, Sean Magee tallied 16 points as Lower dumped Wildwood 68-48. Tom Magill added 16 and Holden chipped in 12. Wildwood played without senior Mike Schafer, who may be out for three weeks, and did pretty well. With Schafer on the sidelines, Gereld Wright picked up the scoring load and Paul Franco did the job on the glass. Wright hit for 15 points and Franco hauled down 13 rebounds as the Warriors beat St. Joseph's 63 to 48. With the win, the Warriors stood at 11 and 2 on the year. WILDWOOD CATHOLIC got 16 points each from Joe Aita and Alex Mairone in a '63-59 victoryover Absegami. The Crusaders outscored Absegami 34-25

in the second half to pick up the three-point win. Ocean City ran into a powerhouse last week and was crushed by Atlantic City 95-51. John McClellan's 18 points paced the Red Raiders. The girls from Middle Township ran their record to 11 and 1 last week following a pair of easy victories. South Jersey's leading scorer, Jennifer Snyder, hit for 30 points as Middle wiped out Hammonton 88-33. Later, Snyder collected 35 points in a 92-37 win over Lower Cape May. The Capers fell to 2 and 7 following the loss to Middle' BALANCED SCORING did the job for Wildwood Catholic against Absegami. .The Crusaders placed several players to double figures in the 46-36 victory. Dorann Vallese led all scorers with 14 points. The win over Absegami pushed Wildwood Catholic to 7 and 0 in league play. Audra Coleman and Frani Barcas combined for 27 points as Wildwood zipped St. Joseph 58-29. The Warriors pressed into an early lead and never looked back. With the win Wildwood remained in the hunt for the CAL II title. Ocean City has a good shot at the CAL I title and a 49-36 win over Atlantic City didn't hurt any. The Red Raiders remained just a game off the pace following the win.

Marge Bonnet, who led all scorers with 15 points, came up with six fourth quarter points as the Raiders pulled away. Ocean City's defense held A.C. to just three points in the final stanza. REMARKS: Now that the National Football League season is over, I got to thinking about the Super Bowl and the announcers who worked the game. First of all, I don't think Frank Gifford ever got over being nervous doing his first Super Bowl. Gifford stumbled several times and didn't do nearly the job we are used to on his Monday Night telecasts. Dandy Don Meredith was having fun as usual, but we didn't hear enough out of

him. I don't even remember hearing him sing when the game got out of reach. He simply set up Joe Theisman, the quarter - baok turned commentator. Now for a few words on Theisman. I DON'T THINK that active players should be allowed to work on postseason games in any sport. Reports say that Theisman got $50 thousand to work for ABC during the Super Bowl. Now, if Theisman is quarterbacking the Washington Redskins in the playoffs and they lose, he still gets the 50 grand for Super Sunday. What I'm trying to say is that Theisman would make more money by losing in the playoffs. I'm not saying that would cause him to throw the game, but the possibility should not exist.
